Ask Matt: Arrow, Homeland, Love for Jane, Sons of Anarchy Finale, Forever and More

Stephen Amell

Question: The mid-season finale of Arrow certainly got the fans talking, but it was Stephen Amell's tweet of "It was a good run" that sent the fandom into a tizzy with speculation of his and the character of Oliver Queen/Arrow leaving the series. Amell further fanned the flames when he took to Facebook noting that Arrow was more then just about Oliver Queen. And the executive producer stated this episode would change the series. All of this feels like blatant fan manipulation beyond normal entertainment standards. I'm in serious doubt that we saw Oliver "die," and feel it is all part of the next evolution of his experiences as The Arrow, but it did get me to wonder, can a show like Arrow continue to be successful, even on a smaller network like The CW, should the decision be made to kill off the main character? You've already fielded questions about the "Laurel Lance/Black Canary problem," and there are many out there who feel she is the weakest link when it comes to the Arrow narrative, but there are some strong supporting characters in Arrow's cast. That being said, we've spent the last three years invested in the story of Oliver Queen as Arrow. What are your thoughts on a situation such as this? — Chris

SNL: Jim Carrey Mocks McConaughey’s Lincoln Commercials, Dances to “Chandelier”

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey returned to Studio 8H to host Saturday Night Live's Halloween episode this weekend, and offered fans a sneak peek of his inventive Halloween costume, as well as the upcoming Dumb and Dumber To (sort of).

Proving that Carrey can still do physical comedy just as well as subtle humor, two of the episode's funnier bits were recurring commercials that mocked Matthew McConaughey's current campaign for Lincoln, and a dance-off between Carrey and Kate McKinnon to Sia's "Chandelier."

Question: You are probably going to get a lot of angry email about how Orange Is the New Black and True Detective didn't win any of the major Emmys. But I think they may have suffered from submitting in the wrong category, and some of the voters probably didn't want to get more viewers angry after letting both OITNB and True Detective submit in the wrong categories. So glad for Julianna Margulies' win for The Good Wife and Jim Parsons' win for The Big Bang Theory. But the biggest shock for me is Sherlock's three wins, couldn't be any happier. Which win/snub shocked you, and do you think OITNB and True Detective could have won more awards if they had submitted in the proper categories? — Aadil

The Emmys: An SOS (Same Old Shows)

Julianna Margulies

If you take comfort in the Emmy Awards' almost shocking predictability in rewarding so many of the same shows and stars year after year, this might have been your favorite Emmy show ever. Otherwise, good luck distinguishing this rather dreary ceremony from any other year's. Instead, maybe it's worth looking ahead to next fall, when Breaking Bad will be out of the running and (lighting a candle to the Academy powers that be) Mad Men's Jon Hamm might finally get his Emmy after losing seven in a row, although at this point I wouldn't count on it. (It would help if Mad Men raises its game for its last stand.)

TCA Awards: Orange Is the New Black, Breaking Bad Win Big

Orange is the New Black

There were few surprises at the 30th Annual Television Critics Association Awards. Orange Is the New Black earned Outstanding New Program whileBreaking Bad's final season scored Program of the Year for the second consecutive season.

While last year, Tatiana Maslany beat out favorites like Bryan Cranston to win the Individual Achievement in Drama honors, this year the Orphan Black star got no love from either the TCAs or the Emmys. Instead, Matthew McConaughey took home the award for his work in True Detective, which also got lauded in the Movies, Miniseries and Specials category.
