First introduced midway through Season 1, Alaric started as a vampire hunter and history teacher at Mystic Falls High, but soon became a surrogate parent to Elena and Jeremy, and a drinking buddy to Damon. When the CW series premiered in September 2009, viewers were introduced to protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a journal-writing high school teen who had just lost her parents. Soon she fell for Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), who she thought was the brooding new guy in school. In reality, he was a century-old vampire captivated by her, a girl who looked exactly like his one-time love, Katherine Pierce (Dobrev), who is also a vampire. Stefan had also just returned from his hometown of Mystic Falls where he reunited with his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) after spending decades away.
