Exclusive: Investigation Discovery Soaps Up With New Daytime Block, Days of Our Knives

Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman

You gotta love a network that brings Guiding Light's Josh and Reva back together! Investigation Discovery has been kicking butt in the ratings with its true crime and love-gone-bad programs — the cable network currently ranks fourth in daytime with women 25-54 — and now it's setting a trap for afternoon soap viewers. On Aug. 20, ID will launch Days of Our Knives, a daily three-hour block (1:00 to 4:00pm, ET/PT) of themed programming hosted by some of the greatest stars of daytime drama, including Kim Zimmer, Robert Newman, Drake Hogestyn, Kristian Alfonso and the queen herself, Susan Lucci.

Daytime Emmy Scoop and Fearless Predictions

Anthony Geary

Apparently, we had nothing to worry about. There was a collective sigh of relief in the daytime TV community last month when it was announced that the 39th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards would air Saturday, June 23 on cable channel HLN (8/7c). Up until then, it was widely believed the awards — which no network wanted — would go untelevised or end up on the Internet. But Malachy Wienges, chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, tells TV Guide Magazine that he "always had two backup plans in place — including one with Reelz — if the HLN [deal] didn't happen. We would never have let these awards leave television."

Back in December, Matthew Ashford...

Matthew Ashford, Days of our Lives

Back in December, Matthew Ashford departed from the Days of our Lives canvas when his suicidal character, Jack Devereaux, drove his car off an icy bridge. Despite this, the NBC sudser insists that Ashford — who has "died" and returned to Days before — is still under contract. Here, TVGuide.com gets answers from the fan-fave himself. TVGuide.com: Days says you're still under contract. True?Matthew Ashford: Yes. I was back [on Jan. 26] shooting a scene where Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) finds a pair of Jack's cufflinks. It wasn't specified, but I think I'm not [there as] a ghost. I think I'm just a figment of Jen's imagination. I just say, "Jennifer, get on with it. If you want to give Frankie a kiss, go ahead, move on." It wasn't maudlin, it was very upbeat. [Editor's n read more

Devotees of Matthew Ashford are...

Devotees of Matthew Ashford are worried about the Days of our Lives star. His heroic alter ego, Jack Devereaux, has been having suicidal thoughts ever since he was stricken with an unspecified, mysterious soap illness that supposedly guarantees him a slow, painful death. Worse yet, he drove his car off an icy bridge last week. In today's episode, Jack's wrecked auto will be dredged out of the river — and no body will be found inside.

So, has the NBC sudser sacrificed Ashford and his classic character just to push Jack's saintly wife, Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) back into the arms of ex-boyfriend Frankie (Billy Warlock)? Is this the bitter end of Jack and Jen's love story? Don't bet on it. "What we are able to say is that Matt is still a contract player," a Days rep tells TVGuide.com. "We can't give any specifics. Sorry!" Guess we'll just have to stay tuned.... read more
