Ashlee wasn't the only famous Simpson celebrating last Saturday in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. The yellow cartoon clan, its creators, and celebrity fans like Lisa Kudrow, Hannah Montana's Mitchell Musso and director Kevin Smith were having a big day of their own at the grand opening of The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios. The lines were longer than ever at this year's Comic-Con International, the annual celebration of all things geeky. Just ask the thousands of Battlestar Galactica fans who waited en masse outside of Ballroom 20 to see their favorite Cylons and colonials in the flesh. Meanwhile, the queue for New Line's special Snakes on a Plane presentation snaked (ha ha ha) out the door and down the side of the massive convention center. There are only two possible explanations for the sheer number of people who invaded San Diego for that weekend: 1) Nerds have learned how to clone themselves or 2) Geek culture is now mainstream culture. Regarding the feature-film version of The Simpsons, the dudes behind the Duff are now talking. "We're very excited about the performances in this movie," raves creator Matt Groening. "Come the Oscars, it's going to be Millhouse's night." Writer-producer Al Jean promises that "this film will far exceed the wildest expectations of every Simpsons fan. The many who went to see Ice Age: The Meltdown this weekend were treated to a 20-second teaser for the long-rumored feature take on The Simpsons. The trailer, which opens on a Superman-like "S" logo — only to reveal it's part of Homer's undershirt tag — and touts a July 27, 2007, release, "is running on 7,000 screens, committing us to opening every place in the world on the same date," exec producer James L. Brooks tells Variety. "Which means, we'd better get started." As for the top-secret story line, Mike Scully, who is penning the film with Simpsons creator Matt Groening, says, "We've taken script security to the point of lunacy, though it helped that we wrote it in Aramaic."
