After making her name on the New York stage, this handsome actress began booking TV and film roles in the early '80s. Able to exude intelligence and compassion, McDonnell was well used in a series of roles, not... read more

Q: I'm sure I'm one of the many people overjoyed to find Mary McDonnell on Emmy's Best Actress short list ? finally! ? although it's a great shame Edward James Olmos was missing. "Faith" was an outstanding Battlestar Galactica episode and I think the show has stepped up a notch in its final season ? quite a feat in itself. Every angst-filled, often downbeat and philosophical minute has been dedicated to inching toward resolution, with no deviation for particular characters or dilemmas of the ... read more
  • What on Earth: Battlestar, Lost finales | Roush Dispatch | 6/14/2008
I’ve finally come back down to Earth—or more precisely, to the world of TV (after a few weeks abroad and way out of the loop)—and am thrilled to find the planet, for all of its problems, in better shape than the explorers of Battlestar Galactica did upon the conclusion of their long and arduous journey. A powerfully downbeat, and thus hardly out-of-character, wrap for the first half of the final season of one of TV’s all-time-greatest science-fiction dramas.Because of my long absence, I had the rare experience of devouring Lost’s first-rate season finale (capping a wow of a comeback season) and the final awesome handful of Battlestar episodes within a 36-hour time span. My head is still reeling. What strikes me about both of these shows is how, for all of the mind-blowing fantasy and murky geeky mythology and eternally unanswered (possibly unanswerable) questions, they are essentially grounded in such rich character and intense emotion. The passionate... read more
  • Inside Battlestar's "Astonishing" Midseason Finale | TV Show Previews | 6/12/2008
Brace yourselves, Galactica fans. Executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick are promising big things for the mid-season finale of the series' fourth and final year (airing Friday, June 13, at 10 pm/ET). Eick teases the cliff-hanger "definitely rivals the Season 2 'one year later' shock," but he's otherwise playing it coy. What we know for sure is 1) ailing Laura Roslin is abducted by the Cylon rebels and, according to Moore, 2) suspected toaster Kara Thrace "is going to make an important discovery [and] all hell's going to break loose." Eick says he's drawn to this plot because "the struggles Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) faces on her own ship call into question the nature of who these people are." For Moore, "the Adama-Roslin relationship [is paramount]. I really like how it's matured. It moves me." President Roslin herself, Mary McDonnell, tells us the midseason finale "is an astonishing piece of work that will be really gratifying for the fans. It's brilliantly done because... read more
  • Ask Matt | 10/22/2007
I am shocked that in the many comments made about Bionic Woman, no one has mentioned the completely flat and robotic acting of lead Michelle Ryan. When I tuned in to the show to give it a try, I was completely turned off by Ryan's dismal performance. What could the producers and NBC have been thinking with that casting choice? One of the reasons Alias was such a critical and cult favorite was because of the fantastic lead performance of Jennifer Garner, who not only kicked butt, but also ... read more
  • Galactica Star Battles Real-world Stalker | Today's News: Our Take | 9/28/2007
Battlestar Galactica prez Mary McDonnell has obtained a cease-and-desist order against an obsessed female fan, the New York Post's Page Six reports. Among her assorted trespasses, the stalker — who on fan forums goes by the screen name "peakeana" — allegedly has been spied following McDonnell around when the actress visits her daughter at Brandeis University, says a classmate. The Post could not reach McDonnell for comment. read more
