Thursday TV: The Red Road, Vikings, Portlandia Join TV's Busiest Night

The road of great expectations invariably contains its share of potholes. So it is with SundanceTV's The Red Road (Thursday, 9/8c), a lugubrious six-episode drama that's as overwrought as it is underwhelming, representing a rare misfire for the channel that brought us such outstanding originals as Top of the Lake and Rectify last year.

At Cameron's urging, House and the team take on the case of a man living with such severe chronic pain that he tries to kill himself, unable to go on after living for years without a diagnosis or any relief from his suffering. As they try to determine whether the man's pain is psychosomatic or caused by a physical disease, parallels between the patient and House's experiences with excruciating, prolonged pain become apparent. When the patient again attempts suicide under the team's care, their search for answers becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Foreman and Thirteen explore their now complicated relationship as they work together on the Huntington's disease clinical drug trial, and Cuddy finds that taking care of her newly adopted baby leaves her little time to run a hospital and baby-sit House at the same time. watch

Is It Just Me: Off the Map's Medical Mystery

Can coconut water actually be used for medicinal purposes?

On the January 12 premiere of ABC's new docs-in-the-wild drama Off the Map, supply-strapped M.D.s Ben (Martin Henderson) and Lily (Caroline Dhavernas) pluck coconuts from a tree in the jungles of South America and administer the water intravenously to an ailing patient. Possible?

Is Off the Map More Than Grey’s Anatomy in the Jungle?

Off the Map may seem familiar, what with its genetically blessed coterie of dark and twisty doctors, but the new ABC series replaces Seattle Grace with, well, a South American jungle. Wednesday's premiere introduced us to the newly arrived staff of La Clinica Cruz del Sur. Let's make snap judgments about them! read more

Off the Map: Not Just Grey's Anatomy in the Jungle

Off the Map may seem like Grey's Anatomy in the jungle, especially with executive producer Shonda Rhimes attached. But series creator Jenna Bans tells TVGuide.com that the show will set itself apart.

How? Jungle medicine.

Map centers on three doctors, portrayed by Caroline Dhavernas, Zach Gilford and Mamie Gummer, who venture to South America to work at a clinic with less than hospitable surroundings and a natural lack of resources. "Here, it's 1952: You don't have high-tech, you don't have big pharma, you have your brain, you have your instincts," Dr. Ben (Martin Henderson) explains to the new doctors after he punches a guy in the face to act as anesthesia in the pilot's opening moments.
