VIDEO: Charlie Day Puts Out to Host Saturday Night Live

Danny DeVito and Charlie Day

His TV show is in its seventh season. He starred in a hit summer film. And his wife is having a baby! But this is no time to relax and enjoy the moment, as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day learned when he hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time. During his monologue, Day got a surprise visit from his Sunny co-star Danny DeVito, who said guys like him and Day have to work because they're not pretty boys. "You're a virgin, man. You gotta put out for these people," DeVito said. It pushed Day to sing a song and play some — as he called it — mediocre... read more

Poll: President Obama's Jobs Speech or NFL Pregame on Syfy?

President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama's speech won't conflict with the kickoff of the NFL season — but it will skewer pregame coverage.

NBC Universal has instead punted that coverage to its cable outlets — Versus, USA Network, Syfy and G4 — while the president presents his job-creation plan to a joint session of Congress on the NBC broadcast network. NFL Opening Kickoff 2011, featuring performances by Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5, will return to NBC after the speech... read more

How NBC's The Voice Plans to Out-Class TV's Singing Competition Shows

Even Carson Daly was suspicious of The Voice's bright red swivel chairs.

On NBC's new singing competition, things kick off with those chairs and blind auditions. Four celebrity coaches sit listening with their backs to the contestants. Should they like what they hear, they slam down on a large button and their chairs swivel to the front. This means they want to guide that contestant through the competition, helping them with everything from their song choices to their style.

Daly, the late-night talk show host and former MTV veejay, first thought it might be "gimmicky" but ultimately found it to be "a great idea in an American Idol world."

"Young people seem to be so enamored with just becoming famous," Daly says. "This immediately takes all of that out. Here, you need skill. You need to be an artist that established artists want to help mold."

And there's the difference: The Voice, adapted from a massively popular Dutch format, aims not to take on Idol in its own game, but to elevate the game itself. Rather than leaving the contestants to plod along, choosing ill-suited songs or worse, the show enlists its coaches — Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton — to mentor the hopefuls. And in a unique twist, the contestants will cherry pick their coach should more than one of them swivel forward.

Why “Judging” Is a Dirty Word on NBC’s Singing Competition The Voice

Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green

To hear Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine tell it, NBC's upcoming singing competition The Voice will be nothing like American Idol.

For one thing, there will be no mean-spirited judges. For another, there will be no "judges."

"I think it's less about being judgmental and more about helping the singers out," he said Tuesday during a press conference. "That's kind of a dirty word, here on The Voice... Judge. Judging."

Cee Lo and Adam Levine Picked as Judges on The Voice

Cee Lo Green and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine will serve as judges for NBC's upcoming singing competition series The Voice, the network announced Monday.
