Marion Cotillard's 9/11 Remarks Out of Context

Hollywood and beyond has been buzzing all weekend about Oscar winner Marion Cotillard's interview containing controversial remarks about 9/11. However, her lawyer is now coming to her defense, saying the remarks were taken out of context. The 32-year-old actress said she felt lied to about certain world events, including the September 11 attacks on America and the 1969 moon landing, in a February 2007 interview on the French channel Paris Premiére's cinema program. Cotillard argued, "We see other towers of the same kind being hit by planes. Are they burned? [A] tower, I believe it was in Spain, burnt for 24 hours. It never collapsed.... And there [in New York], in a few minutes, the whole thing collapsed."People magazine spoke to her Paris-based lawyer, Vincent Tolesano, who came quickly to the actress' defense, saying, "Marion never intended to contest nor question the attacks of September 11, 2001, and regrets the way old remarks have been taken out of context."Many have hear... read more

Marion Cotillard Sings Piaf

Can I give a little shout out to Marion Cotillard for her incredibly classy impromptu backstage performance after her best actress winFirst off I have to say that while I was rooting for Julie Christie Away from Her I wasnt the least bit sorry to see Cotillard win for La Vie en Rose Her performance as French singer Edith Piaf was flat-out amazing and I hope her win will encourage some people who might not otherwise have bothered with the film to rent it I have a feeling her win was the result of academy voters catching up with the movie late in the day and being blown away by it Piafs life was the stuff of old Hollywood melodrama -- childhood abandonment life-threatening illness bad men drugs alcohol despair -- and Cotillard gets it all on screen without descending into cliche And then to cap it all off as she was doing her backstage interviews she sang the chorus of Padam Padam -- classic Piaf about a song so haunting that that it very nearly drives the read more

The TV Weekend: Oscars and SNL

It was Oscar's 80th birthday, but it only felt like Sunday night's show went on for 70 years. (Official count: three hours, 20 minutes.) It’s an annual ritual, beating up on the annual Academy Awards broadcast for being too long, bloated, boring. That can especially be a problem when the show is as free of surprise as this year's was — true, Marion Cotillard's victory over Julie Christie for best actress was unexpected (though well earned), and I loved her gracious and giddy speech (one of the night's few truly memorable and spontaneous moments), but seriously, how many people saw either of their movies? In a year when most of the major film contenders fell something short of cultural phenomena, it's up to the host to make the show relevant and dynamic. Jon Stewart had his work cut out for him, with precious little prep time thanks to the writers’ strike, not to mention the preoccupation of an ongoing, historic presidential campaign that inspired some of his best jokes... read more

Oscar Nominees Clooney and Cotillard Do Lunch

Marion Cotillard is pinching herself. "Under the makeup [my arm] is blue," the French actress told reporters on Monday, showing off her bicep. As the writers' strike seems to be nearing its end, the honorees at the annual Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon could finally focus on something other than the looming threat of yet another show cancellation. And Cotillard, nominated for her performance in La Vie en Rose, is focusing on George Clooney. "I'm very, very happy to share moments with [him]. It's like, 'Yeah, yeah, French girl. It's real.'"Clooney, who had recently returned from Darfur, managed to charm not only his fellow nominees but also the press. "I don't think you could hear her, but she asked how I look so good close up," he joked when asked about his competition in the best-actor category. The newly appointed U.N. Messenger of Peace has also been trying to facilitate negotiations between the WGA and the AMPTP and seemed hopeful that a solution is near. "There's a tentative ... read more
