Riots at its premiere caused the film to be banned for decades, yet this haunting, heretical paean to mad love became an instant underground classic, available at last in this restored version. Luis Bu??uel based 'A Woman without love' on Guy de Maupassant's short marks of director's 'Mexican years' during the 1950's when produced a series of brilliant, satirical masterpieces. An unhappily married woman indulges in a brief, torrid affair with an engineer, but then refuses to leave her elderly husband. Twenty five years later, the former lover leaves a fortune to her son, causing an uproar. Bu??uel undermines the soap opera plot by stripping the characters on any vestige of nobility, cruelly exposing their selfishness and bourgeois hypocrisy.
