China, 1926. The country is torn by revolution and exploited by foreigners. Jake Holman, an American sailor who serves as an engineer aboard the U.S.S. San Pablo, a gunboat which patrols the Yangtze River simply to maintain an American presence in China, wants no part of the whole messy situation and would prefer to simply stay below deck and keep the engines running. He is more at home with machines than people. He is forced to get involved when the gunboat is sent to rescue a group of missionaries upriver at the China Light Mission. Holman is made a part of the landing party and assigned to escort the missionaries back to the safety of the San Pablo. The spiritual life espoused at the mission affects him and draws him out of his shell. For once in his life, he feels a sense of belonging and falls in love with one of the missionaries, young Shirley Eckert, drawn to her innocence and compassion. Unfortunately, the lives of everyone there may be in danger due to the unstable political environment.

Biography of the life of Dorothy Day (Kelly). The title refers to the religious practice of treating all people, no matter how poor or humble, as if they were visiting angels. Day was a famous activist and philanthropist of the 20's and 30's. The film traces her growth - mostly spiritual and religious - as she left journalism to become a suffragette in Greenwich Village. Eventually, Day converted to Roman Catholicism and dedicated the rest of her life to helping the poor.

Nine-year-old Jessica believes in Heaven, Santa Claus and flying reindeer. One day, she finds a wounded reindeer in the snowy woods. Believing it is the real Prancer, she wants to nurse it back to health so she can 'return it to Santa.' Her effort to save it brings about wonderful changes in the lives of everyone: her father (Sam Elliott), their unusual neighbor (Cloris Leachman), a crotchety veterinarian (Abe Vigoda), a department store Santa (Michael Constantine), and the people of the town.

Sentenced to hang in a backwater western town, horse thief Henry Moon (Jack Nicholson) is saved when frontierswoman Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen) agrees to marry him. Taking advantage of the town law that prohibits the execution of married men, Moon follows Tate back to her ranch, planning all the while to escape at the first possible opportunity. But Tate insists that he honor his end of the bargain at work on the ranch. She has no intention of consummating the union, a fact that drives the hot-to-trot Moon up a wall. She puts him to work on the gold mine that she has on her property, while his old gang prepares to relieve the couple of their gold once it's on the surface. Jack Nicholson personally selected movie newcomer Mary Steenburgen for Goin' South. The film also features John Belushi in the role of a dyspeptic deputy.
