Critic's Notebook: The CBS Upfront

CBS

Whenever CBS unveils a new fall schedule, it's like watching an impressive round of chess, as powerful pieces (of programming) are moved strategically around the board (the prime-time line-up), operating from a position of strength to shore up weak spots and holes on the schedule, proving that an aggressive offense is a great defense against stagnation and decline. read more

Mega Buzz: Bones' Killer Cliff-Hanger, Grey's Goodbyes and HIMYM's New Man

Emily Deschanel (Bones), Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother)

I can't believe that Brennan is on the run after the Bones finale. How will the writers resolve that in the premiere next season?
ADAM:
Ask yourself this: Should the writers resolve it? After all, based on the footage we saw of bad boy Pelant doing something to Booth's alarm clock, we're pretty sure anywhere else is safer than Casa Bones. But you can be certain this battle of wits is just beginning. "We wanted to keep our serial killer alive to keep the procedural element of the show in the forefront," executive producer Stephen Nathan says. "I don't like serial killers, but Pelant is close to our hearts. He's someone we want to keep around for quite a while."

On the Set: NCIS: Los Angeles Hits the Beach For a Hawaii Five-0 Crossover

LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell

On the NCIS: Los Angeles set this March day, there's even more bull in the bullpen than usual. The number of buff leading men wearing too-tight shirts has suddenly doubled, and so has the quick-fire banter.

Several of the law enforcers on hand need to be inoculated against smallpox, since their mission is to bring down a madman intent on infecting the population with the virus. "I'm not a big fan of needles," squeaks Eric Christian Olsen, as Deeks. "I'll buy you ice cream if you don't cry," promises Kensi (Daniela Ruah). Linda Hunt, aka Hetty, plays the straight woman, telling Deeks: "You might feel a... read more

Matt's TV Week in Review

Jennifer Hudson

The soundtrack for the last week in TV — and virtually every other medium — was provided by the late and lavishly lamented Whitney Houston. Her sudden, untimely death on the eve of the Grammys helped boost that annual spectacular to its highest ratings since the peak of the Thriller furor (a statistic reminding us of the equally resounding loss of Michael Jackson in 2009). LL Cool J, the Grammys' engaging host, opened the show with a prayer — when's the last time that happened? — as the proceedings took on the feel of a celebration and memorial, when they weren't busy crowning Adele the new Queen of Pop. (And how much fun was she on 60 Minutes?)
