In Saraband, Marianne travels into the country, to the home of her ex-husband, Johan. Johan is undergoing a family crisis with his insolvent and needy son, Henrik, and granddaughter, Karin. Karin is in her early twenties, and Henrik asks Johan for an advance on his inheritance so that Henrik can buy Karin an old Fagnola cello, to make a better impression at the audition for the European music conservatory. watch
Alma (Liv Ullmann) emerges from the cottage to provide the always-unseen interviewer the background for the story, in the first on-camera sequence in Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, 1968. watch
