An ex-Confederate Army officer, John Parrish (Glenn Ford, 3:10 to Yuma, 1957), plans to sell up to nearby Anchor Ranch and move east with his fiancée, but the low price offered by Anchor's crippled owner, Lee Wilkenson (Edward G. Robinson, Mackenna's Gold), and the outfit's bullyboy tactics make him think again. When one of his ranch hands is murdered, he decides to stay and fight, utilizing his war experience. Meanwhile, all is not well at Anchor Ranch where the owner's wife, Martha (Barbara Stanwyck, T.V.'s The Big Valley), has been carrying on for years with her husband's brother who, in turn, keeps a local Mexican sweetie in town.

Billy the Kid gets a job with a cattleman known as 'The Englishman' and is befriended by the peaceful, religious man. But when a crooked sheriff and his men murder the Englishman, Billy decides to avenge the death by killing the four men responsible.

Recently discharged cavalry sergeant Chad Santee (Buster Crabbe) joins his brother, Jubal (Neville Brand), and discovers that Jubal is a wanted outlaw. Unwilling to partner with him or to turn him in, Chad leaves. But jealousies draw the brothers to a deadly face off. Thinking Chad has betrayed him to lawmen, Jubal and his vengeful cohorts track Chad down. And, in a bloody confrontation, Jubal discovers the truth -- one gunshot too late.
