Trailer for the 1957 classic Jeanne Eagels.
A poor but beautiful girl named Jeanne takes part in a beauty contest but fails to be crowned its queen. Nevertheless both her determination and her shapely figure impress Sal Satori, the organizer, so much that he gives her a job as a carnival dancer. He becomes her friend and, before long, her great love. However, being a hootchie-kootchie dancer is not Jeanne's dream: she wants to be an actress. That is why Jeanne takes advantage of the Satori company being in New York to consult a renowned drama teacher, Mrs. Neilson. Jeanne goes onto become one of Holywood s legendary silent screen stars. But her life becomes an exercise in tragedy.
Possessed with a relentless drive to succeed, actress Jeanne Eagels (Kim Novak) pesters producer Sal Satori (Jeff Chandler) for more substantial roles before her voice coach, Nellie Neilson (Agnes Moorehead), helps her land a spot in a Broadway chorus line that catapults her to stardom. When aging actress Elsie Desmond asks her for help in reviving her career, Jeanne's selfishness drives the fading star to suicide. Yet, after Jeanne becomes involved in a highly publicized affair with John Donahue (Charles Drake), the strain brought on by the collapse of the ill-fated union jeopardizes her career, too. And despite Sal's best efforts, it is a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol that finally leaves Jeanne Eagels to die sad and alone.
Kim Novak beautifully portrays Jeanne Eagels, the celebrated Broadway actress who in 1922 made her name playing Sadie Thompson in Somerset Maugham's "Rain." Jeff Chandler plays her lusty love interest.
