Lewis Black Gets to the Root of All Evil

Lewis Black, Root of All Evil

Evil is the new black. Lewis Black, that is. The angriest man in show business is now presiding over the court of pop culture on his new show, Lewis Black's Root of All Evil (Wednesdays at 10:30 pm/ET, Comedy Central). We caught up with the raging funnyman to discuss his new venture. TVGuide.com: Explain the concept of Root of All Evil. Lewis Black: The idea was that we pick two things from culture or life and we have a head-to-head. Two comedians are charged with coming up with why, let's say, Oprah's more evil, or the Catholic Church is more evil. I ask questions and goad the comics and over the course of a half hour we try to discover who or what is more evil. TVGuide.com: What inspired the show?Black: Scott Carter from Bill Maher's show, and David Sacks, who had written a number of good shows, read more

I liked it when networks put ...

Question: I liked it when networks put a small logo, usually ghosted in the bottom right of the screen, so I knew what channel I was surfing to. But now the trend seems to be to have an entire billboard down there, and they are getting bigger and bigger! TNT and ABC Family seem to be the biggest offenders so far. I was watching Kyle XY and they had this huge promotion for new episodes of another show starting soon. I though it would go away after the first minute, but it stayed up there the entire time. I find it very distracting. I now tend to stay away from networks that have these "in your face" messages. Do you think there will be a point when shows will be half commercials? Answer: Don't give them any ideas. It's getting out of hand as it is. This is a new variation on one of my most frequently heard complaints. About the only part of the Emmy broadcast I enjoyed last Sunday was Lewis Black's rant against this practice. He spoke for millions, if my mail is any indication. That ... read more

Conan O'Brien Hosts Comedy Benefit for Injured Service Members

Conan O'Brien by Timothy White/NBC Photo

Bob Woodruff hasn’t had a lot to laugh about in the last couple of years. But thanks to Conan O’Brien and a lineup of top comedians, there will be plenty of humor to go around during a special evening on Nov. 7 to benefit the Bob Woodruff Family Fund.In conjunction with the New York Comedy Festival, O’Brien will host the event, Stand Up for Heroes, which is dedicated to the nation’s injured service members. The proceeds of the benefit — where Lewis Black, Bruce Springsteen, Robin Williams and other special guests will perform at New York City’s Town Hall — will go to the Woodruff fund.Woodruff, who was severely injured in 2006 while reporting from Iraq for ABC News, established the fund a year later to raise awareness and money for members of the military hurt in the line of duty. read more

In the Works: Comedy Central Goes to Court

• The home to Daily Show and Colbert next will skewer court shows with The Root of All Evil, in which Lewis Black "presides" over cases positing that assorted politcal figures, celebs and pop-culture concepts are "the root of all evil." The pilot, says the Hollywood Reporter, pits Paris Hilton against Dick Cheney, and chick flicks against video games. Guest comedians will serve as attorneys.• CBS' kids programming block for the fall includes Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake (checking my calendar... yep, it's 2007), a crime-fighting Sushi Pack, I Was a High School Dinosaur, Horseland (about talking equines and other critters), and Cake (teen girl and her BFFs host a cable-acess show out of Grandma's Airstream). read more

Man of the Year's Barry Levinson Shows Us the M.O.N.Y.

Barry Levinson directs Man of the Year Robin Williams.

Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson has turned his focus to the world of politics. No, he hasn't started making trips to Iowa and New Hampshire. First he directed the Robin Williams-as-president comedy Man of the Year (arriving in stores today on DVD), then just last month NBC greenlit his and producing partner Tom Fontana's new series M.O.N.Y., which follows the trials and tribulations of an interim New York City mayor (played by Will & Grace Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale). TVGuide.com welcomed the chance to speak with the Baltimore native about his bend toward the b read more
