Critic's Notebook: CBS at TCA

When at first you do succeed: do it again. Imitation, not innovation, was the prevailing takeaway when CBS presented its fall prospects (and one notable midseason contender) at the TCA press tour on Thursday.

Not that the network's entertainment chairman Nina Tassler had any apologies for doubling down on what works — not when a franchise like NCIS (launching its second spinoff in September) can achieve what she called the "creative holy grail" with its global dominance, or when syndication and/or streaming deals with outlets like Hulu, Amazon and WGN add to the bottom line for shows including the acclaimed The Good Wife and Elementary and the sci-fi hits of the last two summers. "These [new] platforms aren't replacing each other. They're complementing one another and enhancing the value of the content as it moves from window to window."

How Delayed Viewing Is Changing the Primetime Game This Season

It would be easy to call The Blacklist a hit simply because of its plum time slot — airing after NBC's monster talent competition The Voice. But that would ignore an astounding fact about the show's viewership: Nearly 8 million viewers watch The Blacklist at a completely different time, and not behind The Voice.

Keck's Exclusives First Look: Wonder Woman Meets Two and a Half Men

Who knew Two and a Half Men's Alan (Jon Cryer) was such a Wonder Woman fan? Lynda Carter — who played the superhero on TV from 1975 to 1979 — attends a fund-raiser on the Nov. 7 episode of the CBS comedy, sending Alan into a sex-crazed frenzy. The storyline is based on a chance meeting Cryer had with his real-life teen crush earlier this year at a party hosted by CBS honcho Leslie Moonves, who is close pals with Carter. "I was so transfixed that my wife went over and told her I was a huge fan," says Cryer, who has also been working in Men's writers' room this season. "I, of course, was more tasteful about my obsession than Alan, who has a line, 'I had a poster of her that ended up looking like the bottom of a birdcage.'"

TV Guide Magazine's 60th Anniversary Special: The Past, Present and Future of Television

In our very first issue, TV Guide Magazine polled the top names in TV — including Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle, Jackie Gleason and Sid Caesar — on what the new medium had taught them. "TV is a great way to reach millions of people — who, luckily, can't reach me," Berle quipped. For 60 years, this publication has chronicled the evolution of what remains the world's most dominant source of entertainment. And while viewers now have hundreds of channels at their fingertips and can watch whatever they want, whenever they want, on a multitude of platforms, one thing hasn't changed: Audiences are hungry for great fare, from I Love Lucy to Modern Family and Playhouse 90 to Homeland.

We spoke to 13 titans of TV and asked them a few questions about where TV has been, what it looks like now and where it's headed.

A Day Out With The Talk's Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne

On paper, Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne — the queen bees of CBS' girly gabfest The Talk — couldn't be more different. Chen, a pedigreed journalist, spent years rising up the ranks at The Early Show and hosting Big Brother. Osbourne, meanwhile, has passed the last decade-plus morphing from music manager to reality-TV pioneer and variety-show judge. (Heck, even their husbands are practically from different planets: Chen is married to Leslie Moonves, the power-suited president and CEO of CBS; Osbourne has a 30-year union with rock icon Ozzy.) And yet... read more
