In this visionary historical drama set in the days leading up to the Civil War, Errol Flynn portrays 1854 West Point cadet James Ewell Brown 'Jeb' Stuart who, along with fellow cadet George Armstrong Custer (Ronald Reagan), is assigned the dangerous task of capturing violent abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey). Under the command of Robert E. Lee (Moroni Olsen), the graduates are sent to Kansas where the legendary Brown has been waging a bloody campaign to end slavery. While the Union troops pursue Brown and his followers, Stuart and Custer vie for the affections of Kit Carson Holliday (Olivia de Havilland), the daughter of transportation magnate Cyrus K.
