Why The Supernatural Spin-Off Needs a Female Lead

The Supernatural spin-off Tribes has me nervous.

The main attraction to the series has always been the relationship between Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). But the chemistry between Padalecki and Ackles will be impossible to replicate, so I applaud Tribes' decision to not even try. By making the spin-off an ensemble cast, featuring both human and monster leads, it sets itself apart from its predecessor. Yet when it comes to female characters, I worry it's not going to be different enough.

The 10 Best Supernatural Characters

Supernatural will always be the story of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), but over the years the series has introduced dozens of other characters who have found beloved homes in the fandom. And on Tuesday's episode (9/8c, The CW), Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) returns again when she calls on the Winchesters to help investigate four missing virgins. (Hey, at least it's a step up from dating Crowley!)

Supernatural Cheat Sheet: What to Expect in Season 9

Supernatural returns for its ninth season Tuesday (8/7c, The CW) and we can't wait to see what's next for Team Free Will.

"I think this year's first three episodes of setting up our world are all pretty special," executive producer Robert Singer told reporters at Comic-Con over the summer. "There may be certain moves that some of our characters make that some fans don't like, but I think they're going to understand them ... and it's really going to be driving the mythology."

Supernatural Episode Recap: "Time After Time"

Sam and Dean temporarily put aside their quest to bring down Dick Roman long enough for Dean to get thrown back in time to 1944. So while Dean's hanging with Mr. Untouchable himself, Eliot Ness, Sam's trying to figure out a way to bring him back to the future.

There's a smile on my face as I'm writing this blog. The smile started while I was watching this episode and it hasn't stopped since. This is the first Supernatural this season that has blown me away from beginning to end. It's a complete success. I have no major complaints. It makes me happy to write that, however, this wasn't a given. These '40s noir-themed episodes TV shows like to do from time to time aren't normally my favorites. Everyone wants to do them but not everybody can do them right. Supernatural did it right and then some.

Supernatural Episode Recap: "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"

The painful hellatus comes to an end with a tale about dead loved ones coming back to life in Sioux Falls, S.D., the hometown for the town drunk, Bobby Singer. Sam and Dean go head to head with these "zombies" and, more importantly, with Bobby.

Welcome back to the Supernatural blog. It has been a long (long) break, but it's finally time to get back to the business of Sam and Dean Winchester. Bobby Singer plays a big part in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" and we're all the better for it. It's an episode I really enjoyed even though it was beyond depressing at the same time.
