THE PLOT: When famous explorer Dr. John Benton (Charles F. Miller) stumbles upon an ancient Chinese scroll in a Mongolian tomb, he discovers the secret behind the mystery of the 'Eternal Fire'. The secret dies with him when he is murdered halfway through his lecture on the expedition. All Captain Street (Grant Withers) of the San Francisco Police Department and Jimmy Wong (Keye Luke) , an amateur Chinese detective have to go on to find out 'whodunit' is the Professor's last words "Eternal Fire". Smart deductions and quick thinking soon put Street and Wong on the killer's trail, but not before a few of the expedition members are attacked!.

Summoned to Paris by undercover agent Nardi (Dorothy Appleby), Honolulu detective Chan hopes to get the goods on an international counterfeiting ring. Alas, Nardi is promptly murdered, but not before leaving behind a cryptic clue. With the none-too-expert assistance of son Lee, Charlie puts the pieces together and exposes the identity of the head counterfeiter (which, once again, is no surprise to veteran movie-mystery buffs). More action-oriented than most films in the series, Charlie Chan in Paris makes excellent use of the Fox Studios backlot, which doubled over the years for Paris, London, Prague and any number of European capitals. This comic Joe Dante effort is set in a Norman Rockwell-esque small town at Christmastime. British character actor Lionel Atwill, in his final performance, appeared as a power-mad Englishman attempting to rule the world in this 13 chapter Universal serial. Sir Eric Hazarias (Atwill) is searching the mountains of Himalaya for Metorium 245, the only known antidote to the Bomb. Sir Eric is opposed by United Peace Foundation investigator Rod Stanton (Russell Hayden of Hopalong Cassidy fame); scientist daughter Marjorie Elmore (Jane Adams, who had been so memorable as the hunchbacked nurse in House of Dracula); and a local guide, Tal Shen (Keye Luke, Charlie Chan's number one son). Midway through the serial, the British megalomaniac steps in the background in favor of the even more nefarious Malborn (John Mylong), the power in back of Sir Eric.
