A confused Monk is found trespassing in the home of his late wife, Trudy, and is sent to the Medford Psychiatric Institute for bservation. Monk meets the hospital's brilliant director, Dr. Morris Lancaster, as well as fellow patients John Wurster (Kevin Nealon) - an overly empathic, Zelig-type ("I'm a detective too!") -and Manny, a man in his thirties who still believes in Santa Claus. Wurster tells Monk about a murder that took place at Medford four years earlier and Monk soon finds himself on the case.

Dr. Mark Crest (Kevin Nealon) has built a teleportation device that uses tactical nuclear weapons to open a wormhole in the space-time continuum. The device is intended to transport some animals eight miles across the desert, but during a test, the wormhole grows out of control and Mark finds himself hurled back in time, to the day before the test took place. It happens again, but when Mark warns his colleagu, Dr. Cleo Lazar, (Terri Hawkes), and the project's military overseer Lt. Col Lester Glade (Ronny Cox) about the time loop, they think he's crazy. The time loop continues, each time returning Mark to a point in time closer to the test, and Mark figures out that someone has sabotaged the device. At first he suspects Julie (Jennifer Copping), a young woman who seduced him on the night before the test. And, he's right - Julie is an eco-terrorist opposed to Mark tampering with nature - but she's not the only saboteur. For his debut feature, John Hoffman wrote and directed this effects-heavy family film based on the story {-Dogs from Outer Space} by Zeke Richardson. Produced by Jim Henson Productions, Good Boy! presents the idea that dogs are actually an intelligent alien species sent to earth thousands of years ago to spy on humans in preparation for a full-scale invasion and takeover. But when the spies stop reporting back to the home planet, Canid 3942 (voiced by Matthew Broderick) is sent to earth to investigate. Once there, Canid 3942 encounters Owen Baker (Liam Aiken), a young boy who runs a dog-walking service. Owen befriends the space-dog, renaming him Hubble. When it becomes obvious that the dogs of earth have forgotten their mission, Hubble enlists the help of Owen to get them all into shape before The Great Dane arrives to inspect.
