Attended a prep school in St. Louis that was founded and run by Benedictine monks from England's Ampleforth Abbey.
In 1972, he joined the Acting Company theater group, which was founded by John Houseman. He made his Broadway debut a year later in the company's production of Scapin.
Played the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway and in both the 1980 TV production and the '83 theatrical version.
Met wife Phoebe Cates when they both auditioned for parts in The Big Chill (1983). The two appeared together in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party, along with their children Owen and Greta.
