  • Attended a prep school in St. Louis that was founded and run by Benedictine monks from England's Ampleforth Abbey.
  • In 1972, he joined the Acting Company theater group, which was founded by John Houseman. He made his Broadway debut in '73 in the company's production of Scapin.
  • Played the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway and in both the 1980 TV production and the '83 theatrical version.
  • Met wife Phoebe Cates when they both auditioned for parts in The Big Chill (1983). The two appeared together in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party, along with their real-life children Owen and Greta.
