  • Attended a prep school in St. Louis that was founded and run by Benedictine monks from England's Ampleforth Abbey.
  • In 1972, he joined the Acting Company theater group, which was founded by John Houseman. He made his Broadway debut a year later in the company's production of Scapin.
  • Played the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway and in both the 1980 TV production and the '83 theatrical version.
