Took over as a Cup Series driver for Richard Childress Racing the week after Dale Earnhardt's tragic death at the 2001 Daytona 500, finishing 14th in the No. 29 car (Earnhardt's No. 3 was retired) in Rockingham, N.C.

Drove to victory (by only six-thousandths of a second over Jeff Gordon) in just his third Cup Series start (in Atlanta), faster than any driver in the history of NASCAR's top level.
