"Fantasy Island"

It's been too long fellas, but it was good to have you back! After nearly two seasons of trying to get it made and then trying to get it sold, “Medellin” turned out to be pretty much what we all expected it would be—an unmitigated, “over-acted, under-directed” disaster. The “Hindenburg of a screening” was apparently just a precursor to the film’s critical drubbing, including a nasty personal attack on Vince by Richard Roeper, alleged former frat brother of Ari and current persona non grata at the Miller Gold Agency. And now, it seems that Vince has fallen on tough times—that is, if you define tough times as living a carefree life on the beach in Mexico having sex with multiple, beautiful women, jet-skiing and doing his best Jim Morrison impression. I have to laugh when pampered, reality-deprived Vince makes a statement like, “Life is not all about making money and movies…at least mine isn’t.” He is completely oblivious ... read more

A few months back, while ...

Question: A few months back, while discussing the Emmys, you wrote about The Office's Dwight (Rainn Wilson) having been nominated over Jim (John Krasinski). While Dwight is required to be more over-the-top, you said, Jim was more deserving of a nod. Having just finished Season 2 on DVD (I admit I haven't yet seen Season 3), I have to disagree. If you remove Dwight's bizarre antics from the show, Jim wouldn't have a chance to bring out his quirky expressions and dry sense of humor. I think it's a similar case with Ari and Johnny Drama on Entourage. Although Ari would still be funny trading barbs with Eric and Lloyd, I think Ari's cunning really ramps it up when he's insulting Drama. What's your take on this? Answer: Every straight man (and I mean that in the classic comedy sense, not the Ari-vs.-Lloyd sense) needs a foil, and vice versa, I suppose. Emmy nominations and awards often go for broadly comic characters and performances (see Jack and Karen on Will & Grace), and to that degree, ... read more

I'm so pleased with this ...

Neil Patrick Harris

Question: I'm so pleased with this year's Emmy picks for supporting actor in a comedy. I had figured that Neil Patrick Harris would be overlooked, and seeing his name on the list is great. He's truly great in his role and, to me, he's had a harder job than most TV actors, since he had to break the stigma of Doogie Howser, M.D. I know when the show started, I was convinced he'd still always remain Doogie to me. But Barney really is as awesome as he considers himself to be, and NPH is hilarious. Also, while I adore The Piven/Ari to no end, I am so happy about Kevin Dillon being nominated for Entourage. I feel like the four other guys are too often overshadowed by Piven, so this is great. The only thing I have to complain about in this category is that I don't know who I want to win! Way to go, Emmys, on getting this right! Do you have a favorite, Matt?  Answer: This really is one of the more satisfying categories, although some still gripe that Jon Cryer is a co-lead actor, not a ... read more

"The WeHo Ho"

Before we start tonight congrats are in order Emmy nominations were announced this week and in addition to Entourages nomination for best comedy Jeremy Piven and Kevin Dillon were nominated in the best-supporting-actor category Way to go boysTonights episode left me kind of cold as once again Turtle and Drama went off to deal with some nonsensical situation This time it involved Turtles cousin Ronnie and a sports auction and Eric and Vince disagreed over Vinces next project For all the Billy Walsh haters I am quickly becoming one of them by the way it looks like he will be sticking around to direct Vinces next film though Eric is taking a pass on the producing gig I do need someone to explain to me how to differentiate between Eric the producer from Eric the managerWhile Eric and Vince tended to their oddly interdependent relationship Ari tried to help Lloyd mend his broken heart Naturally being Ari his motivations were purely selfish and hi read more

Emmy Nominees React to Their Golden Opportunities

Rainn Wilson, Neil Patrick Harris and Sally Field are among this year's Emmy nominees.

We know what you think about the nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, but what do the lucky nominees have to say about their good fortune? Some of your favorites reveal what went through their minds as the good news got out. Doug Ellin, executive producer of Entourage (Outstanding Comedy Series nominee) "The New York Times called Entourage the best show in its first season. If for some reason [the voters] appreciate it more and we win this time, there's nothing we've consciously done to change it.... I spoke to Jeremy [Piven], who's in London doing a movie, and I'm playing golf with Kevin [Dillon] in about two hours. Jeremy is kind of our home-run hitter, I knew he was going to get nominated, and when Kevin and Martin Landau also got nominated, it was just great." Tim Kring, executi read more

Lights Out at the Emmys

Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights by Van Redin/NBC Photo

Remember how Charlie Brown used to end up on his back every time he went to kick the football after Lucy pulled it away? Well, that was me, in the pre-dawn of Thursday morning at the TV Academy building in North Hollywood, as the first Emmy category (for best drama series) was read aloud. Amid a gaggle of impatient media crews and anxious publicists, I once again felt sucker-punched by the cluelessly inexplicable whims of the Emmy nomination process. (Go here for a list of nominees.)The football analogy applies because, once again, the Emmy system dropped the ball, failing to acknowledge NBC’s critically worshiped freshman underdog Friday Night Lights, instead finding room for ABC’s cartoonishly lurid freak show Boston Legal (on the basis, so I hear, of a rare detour into quality with a post-Katrina episode). A chagrined Academy source tells me that Friday Night Lights came close, but speculated that it may have flown too far under the radar in a way overcrowded field. Hea... read more

Entourage Finale Promises "Something That's Never Been Done"

Entourage by Claudette Barius/HBO

While the cast of Entourage usually remains mum about future plotlines, we managed to get some hints as to what will be coming up by talking to the boys (and girl) at parties around Los Angeles. While Vince and E’s relationship continues to get more tense due to differing opinions on "Medellin," Ari’s life will be complicated by Lloyd’s leave of absence to deal with personal matters and by Mrs. Ari’s decision to return to the working world. At the L.A. premiere of Transformers, Perrey Reeves tells us, “It’s going to be some fun stuff for Mrs. Ari. You get to find out what she was like before, maybe see what her career might have been.”Rex Lee elaborates, “She means that there have been allusions to what her job was before she got married, so she’s going to go back and revisit that.” And what does Mrs. Ari do for a living? “She’s a retired actress,” says Kevin Connolly. At the HBO party at the W hotel, one of the many pla... read more

April 29, 2007: You Got Got!

I hope you will all forgive me if I digress from the usual commentary for one moment to make an important albeit prurient observation Jeremy Piven should definitely lose the shirt more often Underneath those fitted suits and trendy ties the guys sporting some serious bod Okay now back to our regularly scheduled G-rated bloggingI have decided how I am going to make my fortune and I hope you will all support me in my endeavor I am going to self-publish a book of wisdom from the one and only Johnny Drama I know it has best-seller potential From tonights episode alone Johnny taught us that in families if one person hates someone everyone has to We also learned that the universe can be extremely vindictive in the face of success Thinking that he was in on the joke with the Pauly Shore hidden-camera show Dramas verbal assault on Ultimate Fighting Champion Chuck Liddell was full of bravado and death-defying fearlessness Who else but Drama would threate read more
