CMA Awards Feature Idol Worship, Idol's Breakdown

Kellie Pickler by Rick Diamond/ WireImage.com

Even though Wednesday night's CMAs sent Kenny Chesney off with a second straight Entertainer of the Year win and gave Carrie Underwood a repeat Female Vocalist of the Year award, the night really belonged to Underwood's fellow Idol Kellie Pickler, whose emotional rendition of "I Wonder" — a song about her estranged mother — earned her an enthusiastic standing O.Other big winners included Brad Paisley (male vocalist), Sugarland (vocal duo), Rascal Flatts (vocal group) and Taylor Swift (newbie). Album of the Year went to George Strait's It Just Comes Natural, and his "Give It Away" was named best song. — Ben Katner read more

Nigel Lythgoe Examines American Idol's Flaws

Nigel Lythgoe answers questions at 2007 Fox Summer TCA courtesy Fox

What was wrong with American Idol last season? Nigel Lythgoe, president of Idol's production company 19 Television, thinks it was too much Peter Noone and not enough Melinda Doolittle. In other words, "We didn't really show the personalities of the people," he told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday. "We were so engrossed with the mentors who were particularly good last season, and not really on the Melindas. And we didn't know them as much as we knew the Kellie Picklers from the season before." What happened on Idol led Lythgoe to make adjustments to this summer's So You Think You Can Dance. "We've really gone out of our way to focus on the competitors' thoughts, their feelings, their emotions," he said, "so that we're all attached to them a little more than if they were just dance competitors." —Reporting by Stephen Battaglio read more

June 5, 2007: Season 3 — Episode 1 (Season Premiere)

So glad to have my weekly dose of Kathy back! As I expressed last season, I worship the ground Kathy walks on, so you should expect me to say mostly positive things here. Kathy has the guts to say what most people in show business only think about saying. When you see Kathy's stand-up act live or on TV, and when you watch this show, all you do is wait and think: "What is she going to say next?" After watching, laughing and loving her preceding special Kathy Griffin: Everybody Can Suck It, I viewed this episode by myself, but then my roommate came home midway through it and went right to his room (he likes to watch things from the beginning like moi). All he could hear from his bedroom was me laughing my ass off nonstop. The part he missed was in the first half when I wasn't laughing — I was crying. Just a little. Did I ever imagine that Kathy Griffin would make my eyes water (besides the "laughing so hard I cry" type of crying)? I never thought I'd see Kathy captured on video s... read more

CMT Music Awards Q&A: Teen Sensation Taylor Swift

CMT Music Award nominee Taylor Swift

One of last year's most infectious country singles, "Tim McGraw," came not from some already established Nashville star, but from 17-year-old high-school student Taylor Swift. The video for the song scored the Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, native a nomination for Breakthrough Video of the Year at the 2007 CMT Music Awards, airing Monday at 8 pm/ET, and at which she'll also present. For today's Q&A, we spoke with Taylor about her hit video. Check back Monday for an interview with CMT's Johnny Cash Visionary Award recipient Kris Kristofferson. American Idols Dominate CMT Nominations

Not only is Carrie Underwood up for three statues at this year's CMT Music Awards (to be held Apr. 16), but underdog Kellie Pickler has scored a nod for Breakthrough Video. (Take that, Simon!) Besides Underwood, competitors in multiple categories include Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts and the Dixie Chicks — who will be contenders for the first time in four years. If that doesn't tell el presidente how low his approval rating has gotten, nothing will! read more

Idol Confirms J.Lo and Gwen, Also "British Invasion"

As part of American Idol's first night of viewer-decided eliminations, it was officially announced that both Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani will be performing on the show later this season. Also slated for stop-bys are Jon Bon Jovi, Martina McBride (one of my favorite tennis players), Diana Ross (maybe that fueled the Jacko rumor?), Barry Gibb, and Lulu and Peter Noone from Herman's Hermits (fronting a "British Invasion" theme night. Start shuddering now). In other Idol news, Season 5 finalist Kellie Pickler will perform her new single, "I Wonder," on next week's results show. read more

Another Pickle for Idol Sweetheart's Pop

American Idol alumna Kellie Pickler's father, Clyde, who wrapped up a three-year prison stay last May, is back behind bars. According to Us, Pickler's pop is facing multiple charges — including assault on a female, communicating threats and assault with a deadly weapon — and is being held on $20,000 bond after his wife claimed last Wednesday that he threatened her, saying, "You know that guy I stabbed in Florida that didn't die? Well, it's gonna be different this time, because you are going to die." Yeah, not the best ramp-up to Valentine's Day. read more

Benji Shows Why He's Your "Favorite Dancer"

So You Think You Can Dance champ Benji Schwimmer

What with the flawless, energetic performances, the "Marry Me" signs in the audience and the endless praise from the judges, it was no surprise that Benji Schwimmer won Fox's So You Think You Can Dance last Wednesday. But the 22-year-old swing dancer from Redlands, California, says he "didn't comprehend it" when host Cat Deeley read his name. What we can't comprehend is how Benji performed in the finale, hopped on a red-eye flight to New York, appeared on a couple of TV shows, and still managed to be such a gosh-darn nice guy when TVGuide.com caught up with him on Thursday morning.
