Grew up in the New York City neighborhood of Greenwich Village, where his parents owned a book store.
Hitchhiked to San Francisco after his first semester of college and briefly worked as a carpenter.
Studied method acting with Sanford Meisner.
Made his off-Broadway debut in a 1959 production of Season of Choice.
Retired from Hollywood in the early '80s to found an actors workshop in Connecticut called the Theater Artists Workshop of Westport.
Has acted on stage many times with wife Mia Dillon.
