The play depicts the tragedy of a man who knowingly sold defective plane parts to the government during World War II, and has to face the truth when his son wants to propose to his business partner's daughter. In honor of Cruise's 25-year career (starting from his Risky Business sock-dancing days), Oprah Winfrey interviewed the actor for a special two-part series, for which she met with him at his home in Telluride and at her Chicago studio (a sneak peek of Friday's segment is on Oprah's website here).Audience members from the taping reported back to the AP that none of Cruise's now-fabled antics were on display. Diane Andonovski of Toronto, Canada, said Cruise was "was really calm and collected." Another woman from the audience described the actor as "so sweet and so sincere." ABC's Good Morning America is in damage-control mode after Diane Sawyer failed to ask Katie Holmes any questions about the controversial (if shoddily sourced) "tell-all" that made headlines last week when it posited, among other things, that Suri is actually the progeny of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard (via insemination with Walt Disney'd sperm). "[Sawyer] had every intention of going there," GMA executive producer Jim Murphy insists to the New York Daily News. "But like always, Diane wants to produce creative elements, clips of her early life, spring surprises and have some fun." Such fun elements — including video of Holmes in a school play — ultimately sucked up the eight minutes allotted to the sitdown. "It was one of those bad calls on my part," Murphy admits to Page Six.
