The Claim -- A prospector sells his wife and daughter to another gold miner for the rights to a gold mine. Twenty years later, the prospector (Peter Mullan) is a wealthy man who owns much of the old west town named Kingdom Come. But changes are brewing and his past is coming back to haunt him. A surveyor (Wes Bentley) and his crew scouts the town as a location for a new railroad line and a young woman (Sarah Polley) suddenly appears in the town and is evidently the man's daughter.
In 1849, Daniel Dillon, his wife Elena and their daughter Hope head for California in search of gold. After being lost in a winter blizzard, they stumble upon a hut with a sign above it which reads "Thy Kingdom Come". Fuelled by drink and a lust for gold, Dillon sells his wife and daughter to the prospector in exchange for a gold claim. Twenty years later, Elena and Hope return to the settlement of Kingdom Come and find it a prosperous town and Dillon a wealthy man. Consumed by guilt, Dillon remarries Elena. However, jealousy and rejection take their toll and one momentary lapse of human weakness of twenty years ago brings a final and terrible retribution.
Director Francois Girard explores the life of legendary pianist Glenn Gould in 32 vignettes – each a variation on a theme of the Gould phenomenon, resulting in a biographical mosaic of a film deftly capturing the artist’s uniquely personal journey.
