Where do I start? First, a little self-indulgence. This magnificent episode — part three of a three-parter – aired on my birthday. So, Shonda darlin', thanks for the beyond-awesome birthday present! OK, enough of that. How fabulous was tonight? We knew in our hearts that Meredith would live. I enjoyed reading the plethora of comments the last few weeks, some predicting that "if Meredith dies, maybe she'll continue as narrator à la Mary Alice on Desperate Housewives?” Nope. The title of the episode was "Some Kind of Miracle."Last week when Denny and Dylan showed up in Meredith's temporary afterlife, I thought maybe that would be it. I thought Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyle Chandler were just there for quick cameos with hardly any lines. I absolutely loved how much screen time they had tonight — especially Jeffrey. I enjoyed reading everyone's predictions last week regarding whether Cristina would say yes to Burke and whether Callie would say yes to George. I loved that we got one answer right away and the other one at the very end — George and Callie had gotten hitched in Las Vegas and Cristina gave Burke a "yes" under one condition: "I'm not wearing a ring." When Cristina put the ring on the counter at the end and told Burke: "I don't do rings," I was thinking she was rejecting his proposal — glad I was wrong.I always like when our favorite interns and doctors relate to their patients, so it was nice that the boyfriend (Matt McTighe) who didn't know his girlfriend (Amanda Collins) had cancer blurted out that he didn’t know her middle name, causing George to ask Callie what her's was. Last season, back in April, I made a comment that I was officially old since Mare Winningham was playing a soon-to-be grandmother. That's because, even though I know she was Oscar-nominated for Georgia, I will always think of Mare as Wendy, the gal that Billy (Rob Lowe) discovered was wearing a girdle in St. Elmo's Fire. Are you with me here? But it was good to see her back tonight as Susan Grey, the current wife of Meredith's dad, Thatcher, and the timing made sense since Susan and Thatcher's daughter, Molly (Mandy Siegfried), was there for an emergency C-section. I won't refer to Susan as Meredith's stepmother since Meredith doesn't seem to want to associate herself with Susan and Molly: "You are not my family." Oh, Meredith. So harsh. But I have friends who are in the same boat — they don't really want to become close with their father's new family. Another episode that made you think of your parents. Last week it was "Would you save your alcoholic father by giving him your liver even though he continually beat up your mother?" Tonight it was "Would you rather have your mother die a fairly quick death due to liver cancer, or die a much slower way while not recognizing you due to Alzheimer's disease?" I guess I don't blame Meredith for being disappointed when she found out her mother's cancer was benign rather than malignant. I can't imagine going through life if my mom didn't know who I was. A friend of mine is going through just that, and she's told me how difficult it's been, so if any of you are in the same boat, my thoughts are with you. Kate Burton does a phenomenal job as Ellis Grey, but I feel rather old every time I see her.
