Karl Malden, Oscar Winner and Acclaimed Character Actor, Dies at 97

Academy Award winner Karl Malden, who starred alongside friend Marlon Brando in such classic films at A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, and won another generation of fans with the TV show The Streets of San Francisco, has died. He was 97.

Malden died of natural causes, his daughter Mila Doerner told the Los Angeles Times.

Still controversial, this adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play (by the playwright) caused an outrage upon its release. From this vantage point, Kazan's claustrophobic depiction of the sweaty competition between a dim cotton mill owner and his business rival for the attention of the mill owner's simpering child bride is less shocking than harrowing.

Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is a washed-up ex-prizefighter in his late twenties working on the docks for the local gang boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). He feels depressed over his rag-to-riches rise to the top and eventual fall from the ring. The death of an old childhood friend, ordered by Johnny Friendly, fills him with terrible guilt, because he was unwittingly involved in the murder.

Pick of the Week: April 10, 2007

It's another week of slim pickings when it comes to quality TV-on-DVD releases (I can't wait until August/September when all the new, loaded sets come out). It's a bit odd, but the releases this week fall into three categories: old shows, animated shows and British shows. I selected one of the old shows as the "Pick of the Week": The Streets of San Francisco, Season 1, Volume 1. The acclaimed police drama starring Karl Malden and a very young Michael Douglas came out in 1972, and this four-disc set includes the pilot movie and the first 13 episodes from Season 1. (The box says 16, but the sticker on the front, which says 13, is correct.)The set includes two bonus features, though they're both very short. The first is a 3:45-minute interview with Michael Douglas and Karl Malden, conducted by Army Archerd, and the second is an 8:44-minute pilot presentation.Another noteworthy title next week is Scooby-Doo Where Are You!
