Demetrius and the Gladiators -- The story picks up at the point where 'The Robe' ends, following the martyrdom of Diana and Marcellus. Christ's robe is conveyed to Peter for safe-keeping, but the emperor Caligula wants it back to benefit from its powers. Marcellus' former slave Demetrius seeks to prevent this, and catches the eye of Messalina, wife to Caligula's uncle Claudius. Messalina tempts Demetrius, he winds up fighting in the arena, and wavers in his faith.

Demetrius is an ex-slave who embraces Christianity after he witnesses the Crucifixion. Demetrius' new found peaceful ways put him in direct conflict with Roman Emperor Caligula, who will stop at nothing in his search for the magic robe of Christ. Imprisoned by the Emperor's Legionnaires, Demetrius is forced by Caligula to train as a Gladiator and fight for the Emperor's amusement. To complicate issues, the well-proportioned Demetrius attracts the attention of Messalina, the beautiful wife of Claudius, the man in line to succeed Emperor Caligula.
