With its focus on power dynamics and war, The Originals appears to be the grown-up version of The Vampire Diaries. But executive producer Julie Plec promises the show will be chock-full of romance and angst too.

On the CW's new series The Originals, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returns to New Orleans to take over the city he once ruled. Problem is, the current head honcho is his former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), who no plans to step down.

"There's a lot of history and love in the past," Morgan tells TVGuide.com in the video interview below. "Coming back to New Orleans and trying to kick him off the throne, [Klaus] has mixed feelings about the whole thing.
