February 1, 2007: Ben Franklin

Hello, this is Kate Flannery, the boozy redhead from the best show on TV, The Office. OK, maybe not the best show, but the best ensemble of a comedy series, according to the Screen Actors Guild. We won, fans. We won, and itfeels good and crazy, and I'm sore. (That award weighs 35 pounds!)I am here to talk about "Ben Franklin," the episode airing this week. There is a shower for Phyllis, but the big news is... Meredith yells at Angela!!!!! A new moody Meredith moment. Can you say alcoholic? I knew you could. How about that, sports fans? This is a funny episode written by Mindy Kaling aka Kelly Kapoor. It was fun to tell my old pal Angela to shut up. I am contractually obligated to keep my mouth shut, but they are showing this clip in the promos, so I'm cool. The new episodes have been a lot of fun to shoot — especially because we just found out that we are going to be back for a full fourth season. Ahh, job security. It keeps me very grateful.Speaking of grateful... we won a SAG... read more

Acting It Up at the SAG Awards

Yes, that was my shout of glee that woke up the neighbors Sunday night when Chandra Wilson was named outstanding female actor in a drama series for Grey’s Anatomy. At long last, Miranda Bailey has been given her due, and the wonderful Ms. Wilson rose to the occasion with a rapturous acceptance speech, acknowledging how unlikely it would be for someone with her skin, her nose, her height, her weight, to be accepted in this industry. (I think I also yelped in delight when the entire Grey’s cast took the stage for its well-deserved ensemble acting award.)This on the same night that Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera also took home an Actor trophy. Another unconventional, but absolutely right, choice.I tend to enjoy the crisp, fast-moving SAG Awards telecast—aside from those pretentious opening monologues in which the likes of Marg Helgenberger (revealing an astounding lot of cleavage, right up there with Marcia Gay Harden), Jada Pinkett Smith and Freddie Rodriguez remind ... read more

9:01: The history of Julie Andrews is still rolling, and I'm actually learning a lot. Did anyone else know about her books and donations? 9:04: Dick Van Dyke's bow tie is huge! But how can you not love him, right? Who better to present the life-achievement award to Julie than him? Eddie Murphy's right... the British actors do sound really distinguished when giving their speeches — Julie didn't even flinch. Patrick Dempsey looks bored, though. Sit up straight, doc, the camera is always watching! read more

Short Cuts: Julie Andrews, ScarJo and More!

Julie Andrews will be honored with the lifetime-achievement award at the 43rd-annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, being held Jan. 28.... G4 has ponied up $16 million for shared syndication rights to Cops.... The amount of time people spend watching TV shows via video-on-demand or DVR recordings has doubled in the past year. The same study by Leichtman Research shows that 12 percent of U.S. households now have DVRs, versus 3 percent two years ago.... Sources tell the New York Post's Page Six that Scarlett Johansson was a "nervous wreck" when she recently braved her first Brazilian waxing at the Oasis Day Spa. What's more, the crew of aestheticians reportedly couldn't stop admiring the actress' body. Not news per se, but a fine thought to start off a Monday morning. read more

Do you know the name of the ...

Question: Do you know the name of the first-ever made-for-TV movie?

Answer: Like all "first" questions, this one is thorny. Generally speaking, the first two made-for-TV movies are considered to have been The Killers and The Hanged Man, both of which date from 1964 and were made by MCA-Universal under the aegis of superagent-turned-media-mogul Lew Wasserman. Wasserman, who shepherded Universal into the world of television production and distribution, saw an opportunity to leverage one of the company's assets — a huge library of old movies — by remaking them for TV. The Killers was a remake of a 1946 film starring Burt Lancaster and based on Ernest Hemingway's short story read more

SOUND JUDGMENT

Hot to launch a stage revival of The Sound of Music — and now that his first pick, the impossibly hot Scarlett Johansson, has declined the lead role — producer Andrew Lloyd Webber is considering using a reality-TV competition to find his new Maria, says the New York Post. Meanwhile, Julie Andrews has christened Cameron Diaz her choice to fill her nun's sensible shoes, should there be a big-screen remake of Music — provided that "My Favorite Things" be rewritten to include "Hair gel/and Angels/and young boys named Justin." read more

Let's go wayyyyy back to the ...

Question: Let's go wayyyyy back to the '50s. I'm looking for a show about a little girl named Eloise who lived in the penthouse of the Plaza in New York City. I really want to know who the actress was and what program that was. My sister thinks it was a Playhouse 90 or Hallmark Theatre production. I'd really appreciate any info you could dig up. Thanks.

Answer: Your sister's a sharp one, Phyllis. Hang on to her.

In 1956, Playhouse 90 presented Eloise, a live broadcast based on author and performer Kay Thompson's popular character, who first appeared in book form. Young Evelyn Rudie played the titular girl, a popular fictional New Yorker who did indeed live at the famed Plaza. Cast members included Hans Conried and Louis Jordan, while Thompson, Ethel Barrymore, Monty Wooley and Conrad Hilton played themselves.

Mary Poppins Still Flies High

Composer Richard Sherman (along with his brother Bob) has created some very memorable movie music, but none more magical than the jolly collection of songs in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins. Here, the 76-year-old Sherman tells TV Guide Online about the extra-packed Poppins 40th Anniversary DVD (out this week) and a musical legacy that's as sweet as a spoonful of sugar.

TV Guide Online: How'd you like reuniting with Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews for this DVD?
Richard Sherman
: Dick, Julie and I share a great bond. It's like when you see an old friend after many years and the years just fall away. It seems like yesterday. They are wonderful people. What can I say? It was a warm feeling.

TVGO: One DVD treat is the three of you reminiscing around the piano.
Sherman:
We were all very relaxed, but I was told not to ask Julie to sing because she is very self-conscious. She had an operation and now she can't sing those beaut read more

Meet Lost in Space's Robot!

Viewers never saw him, but Dick Tufeld created two of TV's most enduring pop-culture catchphrases: "Danger, Will Robinson, danger!" and "That does not compute." Yep, the longtime announcer was the voice of Robot on the '60s sci-fi series Lost in Space. Tufeld still does voice-overs today, though he once suffered from a paralyzed vocal chord that kept him from speaking above a whisper. That is, until a rare operation restored his fond, familiar voice. Here, he happily chats away with TV Guide Online about his metallic alter ego. TV Guide Online: It's nice to talk to someone who gave so many generations so much pleasure.Dick Tufeld: You know there was a guy inside the tin can — Bob May. He had to be in there eight hours a day on the set. He moved the arms and legs and memorized all the lines and spoke them. They put me into post-production and I dubbed Robot's voice in. TVGO: Did you know you were creating a legend?Tufeld: I read more
