Whoopi Goldberg has always had a wonderfully distinct point of view, and one that’s probably just right for her new job on The View. But unlike her immediate predecessor in the cohost seat, this POV is not trained entirely on herself. For me, that’s a relief.Tuesday’s 11th-season opening of ABC’s daytime squawk show was a pretty low-key lovefest, as the gang embraced Whoopi while catching fans up on how they spent their summer vacation: Elisabeth Hasselbeck became more noticeably pregnant, Joy Behar nursed a virus and Barbara Walters made progress on her memoirs. After weeks of speculation, Barbara Walters announced live on The View today that Whoopi Goldberg will be the new cohost of the daily ABC chatfest."I love you guys. This is a big ol' thrill for me," said Goldberg when she was introduced on the show this morning. "I like Rosie," Behar told TV Guide at the American Women in Radio and Television's Gracie Awards in New York City June 18. "I thought that we kicked a little butt over there, the two of us, and I thought she raised the game and I was happy to have her." No such thing as a lull in the TV business, both on and off screen, not even in the once-sleepy period between the end of the traditional season and the start of June. Forget about all the off-season shows premiering this week (you probably will eventually, anyway), a rather staggering glut, but fans won’t want to forget that House and Boston Legal have their season finales tonight (delayed a week to make room for reality TV). Beyond what’s on TV, it’s been a crazy couple of days for the business itself.On Friday, it was made official that Rosie O’Donnell was off The View for good, a few weeks ahead of schedule.
