Debuted on Broadway in 1961 as Rolf Gruber — the Austrian teen who sings "I Am 16" with Liesl — in The Sound of Music.
Appeared with Robert Duvall in a 1965 off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge; the director's assistant was Dustin Hoffman.
Four years later, he appeared opposite Hoffman in the groundbreaking 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy.
Champion of Native American rights.
Estranged from his daughter Angelina Jolie since leaving her mother in the '70s, although the two briefly reconciled and appeared together in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
