Another Betty Gets Ugly

Betty White by John Shearer/

She’s come a long way from St. Olaf! Hot on the heels of her staggering turn as Stephanie’s nasty mama on The Bold and the Beautiful, Betty White has booked a role much closer to home: White will play herself on a December episode of Ugly Betty featuring what is sure to be a priceless taxicab showdown between the Golden Girl and "Mode" magazine’s 14-karat beyotch Wilhelmina Slater. In other Ugly casting news, Tru Calling commodity Eliza Dushku is set to play a cover girl whose stint in rehab is cut short for a photo shoot. (Don’t get any ideas, L.Lo!) Alas, a recent gossip-column bit about Kirstie Alley playing a monstrous modeling agent — and wanting bud John Travolta for a cameo — is allegedly lacking in the truthiness department. —Reporting by Damian Holbrook read more

Ugly Betty Is Not Up Kirstie's Alley

Kirstie Alley by Lester Cohen/

Kirstie Alley will guest-star on an upcoming episode of ABC's Ugly Betty as a "zaftig, tough-talking modeling agent" who berates her wafer-thin clients, says the New York Post's Liz Smith. What's more, Alley is reportedly trying to lure her Look Who's Talking costar John Travolta into delivering a cameo during her visit. What, no love for Abe Vigoda?!UPDATE: Turns out Liz Smith was just grabbing at air with this one. Kirstie is a no, though Betty White is a yes (as is a Tru Calling alum). Betty Does Dallas: Brady Buncher Plays J.R. for Laughs

Larry Hagman courtesy CBS Television/SOAPnet

Betty Thomas, the director who delivered two tongue-in-cheek Brady Bunch movies to the cineplex, is in talks to seize the reins of the big-screen Dallas remake, which at this oft, oft-delayed point still has John Travolta attached to play J.R. Ewing. Screenwriter Pam Brady (Hot Rod, and perhaps related to Cousin Oliver?) is taking a fresh, fresher crack at the script.Over the course of the assorted delays, such once-eyed stars as Jennifer Lopez (as Sue Ellen), Luke Wilson (Bobby) and Shirley MacLaine (Miss Ellie) have bailed on the adaptation. Meg Ryan was the latest name bandied about to tackle Sue Ellen. A January 2008 start date is now being targeted. read more

John Waters: Hairspray Hubbub Is Hooey

Original Hairspray auteur John Waters, responding to the New York Daily News' piece titled "Travolta in 'Spray Revolts Gays," argues, "It should have said 'Revolts Gay,' because it's just one person" — Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff — raising a ruckus. (Naff's beef is with Hairspray star John Travolta, whose Scientology faith has anti-gay tenets.) As Waters so wonderfully puts it to the News, "If [Travolta] was homophobic, dancing in [drag] with as many gay people as are working on this film, he would have had a heart attack and been dead." read more

Gays Urged to Say Nay to Travolta's 'Spray

John Travolta and Nikki Blonsky by David James/New Line Cinema

Gays are beseeched to turn their nose up at Edna Turnblad, to protest the casting of John Travolta in the forthcoming Hairspray movie. Why? Scientology, to which JT subscribes, "has operated reparative therapy clinics to try to 'cure' gays," Washington Blade jefe Kevin Naff tells the New York Daily News. Seeing as Scientologists are obliged to donate a chunk of their income to the church, "by going to this movie, gay people are literally putting money into an organization that seeks to cure them," Naff contends.Naff also says "shame on" openly gay John Waters — who wrote and directed the 1988 movie on which the new pic is based — for allowing Travolta to be cast. Travolta's rep didn't respond to the News' request for comment. read more

Ooh-ooh-ooh! "Horshack" Talks Up the Kotter DVD

Ron Palillo (second from left) in Welcome Back, Kotter

From Mr. Peepers to Mr. Cooper, classrooms and comedy comprise a favorite TV pairing, but no show combined the two with its era better than Welcome Back, Kotter. From floppy hats and bell-bottoms to the slightly stoned-out look on the students' faces, Kotter became the 1970s for most kids. Products such as lunch boxes, board games and dolls (including a perfectly coifed John Travolta) solidified the iconic stature of the series and its cast. Ron Palillo, who played lovable schnook Horshack, took some time to raise his hand (with a quick, "Ooh-ooh-ooh!") and answer a few questions about Kotter's new Season 1 DVD (available now; read more
