As a boy, he won a 4-H ribbon for raising vegetables. Gardening continued to be a passion throughout his life.
First TV role, at age 16, was a recurring part on The Patty Duke Show.
Collected art and antiques.
Was originally cast in 1986's Platoon. After bowing out due to a scheduling conflict, his role was given to John C. McGinley.
Spoke openly about his recovery from alcoholism. He quit drinking in 1989.
