John Lasseter Fast Facts:
  • Was referred to as the bonus baby by his father, because his mother was unaware that she was carrying twins until shortly before his birth (his sister is six minutes older).
  • Won his first "award" at the age of 5, when he received $15 from a local grocer for a crayon drawing of the Headless Horseman.
  • Contacted Disney Studios about his interest in animation while still in high school. They told him to learn the basics of drawing and they would teach him animation.
  • Only the second student to be accepted into the Character Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts; he was classmates with Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands) and The Incredibles director Brad Bird.
  • In 1986, two years after leaving Disney, he cofounded Pixar, which was bought by Disney in 2006.
  • Directed the first animated short film to win an Oscar, 1988's Tin Toy.
  • Directed Toy Story (1995), the first feature-length computer-animated movie.
  • Opened the Lasseter Family Winery in 2002.
  • Became the first producer of animated films to receive the David O. Selznick Achievement Award from the Producers Guild in 2010.
  • Was surprised when the producers of the animated feature Cars 2 (2011) created a character for him to voice in the flick.
