  • Father was an Anglican vicar and his brother is a monk. 
  • While at art school, one of the models he painted was Quentin Crisp, whom he would go on to portray in The Naked Civil Servant (1975). Hurt didn't realize the connection until the middle of filming.
  • Breakthrough film role was as Richard Rich in Fred Zinnemann's A Man for All Seasons (1966).
  • In 1984, announced the death of Richard Burton, at whose Switzerland home he had spent the weekend. They had worked together in 1984 (1984), Burton's final feature.
