John Glover: Smallville's Luthor Is a Winner as Drowsy's Loser

On the CW's Smallville, John Glover plays the scheming and sexy Lionel Luthor. But this summer he's taking a break from channeling a businessman who wants to take over the world by portraying a lovable loser who can barely make it out of his apartment: the nameless Man in Chair, aka the narrator of the delightful Broadway musical spoof The Drowsy Chaperone. A veteran character actor who honed his skills on stage, Glover has remained active in the theater, despite his busy film and TV schedule. But his turn in Drowsy marks the first time he has graced the Great White Way in over a decade. The actor chatted with TVGuide.com about his return to Broadway, his small-screen success and why he's so good at playing bad. TVGuide.com: Although you're a theater guy, The Drowsy Chaper read more

Smallville Star Gets the Chair

Smallville's John Glover, a Tony winner in 1995 for Love! Valour! Compassion!, in April will replace Bob Martin in Broadway's The Drowsy Chaperone, playing the Man in Chair/narrator, the New York Times reports. Martin, as you undoubtedly read in today's fresh Q&A, is off to the West End to fill the role in a London staging of the hit musical. read more

Smallville's John Glover: Will Lex's Dad Woo Clark's Mom?

While Clark, Lana, Lex and the rest of the Smallville "kids" ride their own romantic merry-go-round, something is quietly percolating between two of the elders, no less than Lex's dad and Clark's mom. To best ascertain Lionel's intentions toward the widow Martha Kent — as well as find out what he really thinks about Lex's own honey, Lana — TVGuide.com chatted up the prominent patriarch's portrayer, John Glover. (Smallville airs Thursdays at 8 pm/ET, on CW.) TVGuide.com: OK, the first question I want to ask is: The mane, is that all yours?John Glover: Yes. [Chuckles] No extensions, no anything. TVGuide.com: Do you think his leonine look is part of what makes Lionel such a force to be reckoned with?Glover: A lot of it, sure. Look at Sampson. And look at wha read more

September 28, 2006: Kneel Before Zod

So, how Superman II was it when L-Zod uttered: "Kneel Before Zod"? Then Clark does kneel and takes his hand with Zod thinking he holds all the power in the world. But, of course, that's not how things turned out. Clark got the best of him just like in the movie. Was it me or did the Zod that got flushed out of existence look a tad like Terence Stamp circa 1980? Maybe it's just me.Martha and Lois ended up in the Fortress of Solitude. (Has everyone on the show been there?) I did appreciate Jor-El thanking Martha for raising Clark. When the action wasn't at the Fortress, it was in the Phantom Zone, where a powerless Clark wasn't a match for anyone or thing on that prison planet, including that Kryptonian dude from the Season 5 premiere — he and his posse got a few good licks in before Jor-El's assistant Raya gave up her life to get Clark out of the Zone. When the action wasn't in the Fortress or the Zone, it was with Lana and L-Zod. In a continuation from last season, Lana continu... read more

Schneider: Smallville Death Was "Necessary"

"Reckoning," the 100th episode of WB's Smallville (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET) lived up to the hype with the heroic, if not altogether unexpected, death of Jonathan Kent, who perished doing what he's done for much of the show's run: protecting adopted son Clark's secret. But what did original cast member John Schneider think of the patriarch's passing? TV Guide spoke to the actor about his reaction, what he is most thankful for, and more. TV Guide: How do you feel about the way your character bowed out?John Schneider: I thought it was really, really good. For me it was reminiscent of The Red Badge of Courage. There was a character in The Red Badge of Courage who refused to die laying down. I th read more
