John Edwards "Ashamed" of Affair with Filmmaker

Former presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday admitted to having had an extramarital affair in 2006 with a novice filmmaker.Edwards previously lied about the matter during his presidential campaign, denying a tabloid's report on it in October and subsequent allegations. But in an interview with ABC News' Bob Woodruff (broadcast on Friday night), Edwards went public about having had sexual relations with Rielle Hunter, but denied that he is the father of her young daughter. Like a lot of people, the two met at a bar in New York. Unlike a lot of people, his political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce documentary videos for his campaign website. "In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs," he said in a statement. Cheers: Colbert in '08!

Cheers to The Colbert Report for capping off an exuberant Pennsylvania-primary week in Philadelphia with appearances by Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards. Clinton fixed the telecast's technical problems, Obama put distractions "on notice," and Edwards advocated "universal haircare" during "The Edwords." Still, my favorite moment of the week was when Colbert asked if he could lick the Liberty Bell because he wanted to "tongue the crack of Liberty." He may not have made it onto the presidential ballot, but Colbert has made himself a real election-year player. • For more Cheers & Jeers, check out the new vodcast.• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We may feature your Cheer or Jeer on TVGuide.com or in TV Guide magazine! read more
