Ask Matt: Upfront Fallout: 24 and "Event" Series, Parenthood, Bones, Wonderland

Question: I'm shocked and delighted by Fox's announcement about bringing back 24, but honestly, I think this points to the future of television. It's the same thing with The Following: Give us shorter seasons, TV Gods! Seriously, 22-episode seasons just don't work for so many shows, especially the serialized ones. How much filler was there in any given 24-episode season of real-time 24? A ton, inevitably. And every other heavily serialized show you can point to is eventually going to fall back on filler episodes, or extended (and frustrating) wheel-spinning, etc. It's just inevitable, and the best serialized shows are the ones that best manage this reality: for instance, The Vampire Diaries splits its season into three or four tightly focused mini-arcs that pack as much into each mini-arc as most shows cover in a whole season.read more

Hoping to Duplicate Success, Networks Turn to More Spinoffs

It's one of the oldest adages in Hollywood: If at first you do succeed, try and try again... to replicate that hit. Just as the movie business remains entrenched in sequel mania (Scary Movie 5, anyone?), almost every broadcast network has a spinoff of a popular series in the works for next season.

ABC is looking to expand its Once Upon A Time universe with the Alice-centric Once: Wonderland. The CW is building The Originals around The Vampire Diaries baddie Klaus (Joseph Morgan). NBC will explore Chicago law enforcement in producer Dick Wolf's untitled Chicago Fire offshoot.read more

Ask Matt: NCIS' "Red" Team, Top of the Lake, Gays on Days, More

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!

Question: Are you as I stumped as I am about what makes the NCIS Red Team unique? In last week's episode of NCIS: LA, there was a moment when they were trying to tell a Mexican gunman to put his weapon down and none of them could speak Spanish. Which is odd given they are suppose to be a very mobile unit that goes anywhere, you would think they would be well versed in multiple languages. I was under the impression they were going to be NCIS' version of Seal Team Six. As for casting, the only one of the team that made an impression on me was the Aussie agent Claire Keats (Gillian Alexy). I still think Kelli Giddish would have been a better choice for the lead. Just my thoughts. — Leon

NCIS: Los Angeles Boss Goes Personal for "Red" Spin-Off

As NCIS: Los Angeles executive producer Shane Brennan prepares to possibly launch the franchise's third show, some might wonder: Does the world need another NCIS?

First Look: NCIS: L.A. spinoff sees "Red"

"I'm sure it's a question a lot of people are asking and I can assure everyone it's not something that we approached lightly," Brennan tells TVGuide.com. "It's something that I certainly wouldn't have done if I didn't think we could make it different and turn a different light on the NCIS world."

The key difference is that the characters at the heart of the new series.... read more

The Tuesday Playlist: High Times on Justified, New Girl; Splash or Belly Flop?

How long has the Justified fan waited for someone to ask this question to Boyd Crowder: "Where did you get all of those teeth?" You'll likely be grinning yourself, while cringing at the edge of your seat, as the pleasures just keep multiplying — a high-octane Justified highball of great banter, tremendous suspense, clever twists and reversals — in a harrowing, hilarious and fantastically entertaining episode, so eventful you might mistake it for a season finale, but thankfully there are still two more episodes to go (Tuesday, 10/9c, FX) in this terrific fourth season.

It has all been building to this violent showdown between the forces of good (the U.S. marshals) and evil (everyone else, from Boyd's crew to an army of thugs and snipers representing the Detroit mob). The target is Drew Thompson (the great Jim Beaver), a 30-year fugitive in sheriff's clothing, currently in the marshals' custody, although they feel like sitting ducks, outnumbered and outgunned in Harlan as they calculate several desperate escape maneuvers while awaiting rescue. The episode, written by exec producer Graham Yost and Chris Provenzano, is titled "Decoy," and revolves around a series of standoffs, confrontations and subterfuges that leave few unscathed and unbloodied. Special props to Patton Oswalt as the loyal and lovably resilient Constable Bob, who even Raylan has to admit is a "tough son-of-a-bitch" by the time the dust settles, following a tense encounter outside a (metaphorically apt) high-school principal's office.

First Look: NCIS: LA Spinoff Sees Red

"There's often the question, 'Why would you do a third one?'" NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles executive producer Shane Brennan admits of the franchise's next spinoff, which will launch as a two-part "embedded pilot" on NCIS: LA March 19 and 26. "'How would it be different?'"

I heard there may be trouble ahead for Booth and Brennan on Bones. Please tell me that's not true! — Hilary, via Twitter
ADAM:
The couple did seem to be having some serious communication issues before Brennan got shot in this week's episode. I think you can put safe money on those issues not being quickly resolved. In the meantime, Brennan will also have trouble with another man in her life: new squintern Oliver Wells (Brian Klugman), who has some issues with Brennan's authority. "[He] is completely un-intimidated by Brennan. He does respect her, but he doesn't revere her," executive producer Stephen Nathan tells us. "That's a new thing for these interns because [Brennan] holds their future in her hands. He has so many degrees and is so accomplished, he doesn't need her. It's very disorienting and disconcerting for her."
