Showtime has picked up 12 episodes of The United States of Tara, to begin filming this summer. Penned by Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno), the series centers on a wife and mother with a multiple personality disorder, to be played by Little Miss Sunshine's Toni Collette.As previously reported, John Corbett will costar as Collette's husband. Steven Spielberg will produce. Will Cody successfully segue into writing for television? Can she move from portraying teen angst to that of adults? Showtime, luckily, is giving us the chance to find out. Sex and the City alum John Corbett has signed on to star opposite Toni Collette in The United States of Tara, the Showtime comedy pilot featuring Little Miss Sunshine's mom as a woman battling multiple personality disorder. Corbett, says the Reporter, will play Tara's husband, Max, "a ruggedly handsome contractor who... tries to read as much as he can about his wife's condition." In the meantime, I reckon, he gets the thrill of having three-ways, minus the usual complications.

As a writer, I work alone. And I like it. When creating my books, I'm not only the writer, I'm the director, the costume and set designer, I'm hair and makeup. And I'm the entire cast. The wrap parties are pretty quiet, but I get all the champagne and pizza. It's a great job, and not nearly as schizophrenic as it sounds. Really.
When a book's being adapted into a movie, the writer turns all those other fun jobs over to the movie experts. If the writer's lucky, those experts may want her input.
