College dropout Ross (Jason Schwartzman) shows up at the bungalow of Spider Mike (John Leguizamo) in L.A.'s north San Fernando Valley looking to score some speed. Spider Mike's companions at the bungalow that day include his greasy-haired, red-eyed girlfriend, Cookie (Mena Suvari), video game addict Frisbee (Patrick Fugit) and Nikki (Brittany Murphy), a giggly Vegas stripper, whose boyfriend The Cook (Mickey Rourke) concocts the local speed supply in his airless motel room lab. Seduced by Nikki and her promise of an unending drug supply, Ross agrees to become chauffeur and errand boy for The Cook. Over the next few days, Ross ricochets between the hilarious and the bizarre as he descends into the anarchic and dangerous world of speed freaks in a three-day odyssey into crystal-meth hell.

When Clyde and Lucy introduce him to Connie, however, things change. Being with Connie inspires Jack to learn to cook, pursue a new career, and take swimming lessons so he can give her the romantic boat ride of which she dreams. But as Jack and Connie cautiously circle commitment, Clyde and Lucy's marriage begins to disintegrate.
