Coached as an assistant for 17 years beginning in college at San Diego State, Florida State, USC and Arkansas, then later in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Diego Chargers.
Served under future NFL head coach Don Coryell and with future Hall of Famer John Madden while assisting at San Diego State.
Won the national 35-and-over U.S. Racquetball Championship in 1976.
Three-time Super Bowl (XVII, XXII and XXVI) champion as head coach of the Washington Redskins; first hired in 1981.
