Though I have no idea how the title related to this ep, a better one might have been "Requiem for Demonic Dexter." Dexter continued to try to alter the monster within and with each week of "recovery" gets closer and closer to taming the wild beast. I must say they are pulling out all the stops in the second season of Dexter. This is the antithesis of the sophomore slump. If anything, Dexter has gotten even better this time around.Dexter decided to control the actions of Lundy and his task force with his "Presto Manifesto." In an action designed to force the force to run "scattershot," Dex offered them the scent of another dog that led them down a dead-end trail. However, it really didn’t matter, because with Chopin’s help, (Nocturne No. 2 in E flat major, to be exact), Lundy put some of the pieces together and figured out the Bay Harbor Butcher is in law enforcement. Episode Recap: "Dex, Lies and Videotape" | Dexter | 11/5/2007
I know I’ve said this a hundred times before, but this was perhaps one of the best Dexter’s ever written. Ever. I watched this ep a few days ago and have not stopped thinking about it since. I thought we had already made the connection between Harry and Laura and the possibility that Dexter is Harry’s biological son. Dexter wanted to know if Harry planned to have him "settle the score" on behalf of his mother. Perhaps Harry felt guilty for basically leading the murderers right to Laura and her two sons.Lila was certain Dexter’s newfound discovery that even though he "built everything in my life on what Harry told me to be," and learned that Harry didn't follow his own code, was part of a fresh start so he could figure out who he is. She assured Rita and Gail at dinner that Dexter was doing well in recovery. How well he was doing in recovery took most of the ep to find out. The only bad thing about TV shows being released on DVD is that you get used to watching an entire season all at once and it makes having to wait a full week to see a show like Dexter an enormously aggravating event!I’m not sure what the juiciest thing we found out was. Was it that Harry lied to Dexter in order to "bury his own guilt"? Or that Harry was on the case of his mother’s murder? Laura Moser was an informant? Harry was actually Dexter’s father? Or that Doakes and Laguerta used to do the nasty in the backseat of the squad car?First we found out that Dexter’s mother was the informant on the cocaine case that lead to her imminent demise. When Harry touched little Dexter on the head during the interview with her and said, "I won’t let anything happen to you or your boys," I wondered if there was more. Jumpin’ Jehosephat, that was a good Dexter! We had intrique and murder and sex and scandal. Delicious.Rita’s mother, downplayed wonderfully by JoBeth Williams, visited, and though she was apparently supportive of the Bay Harbor Butcher, she also inferred that Dexter has a secret, and wouldn’t she be surprised. Rita didn’t quite nod, but I felt she was thinking, "Why yes, he does. He’s a drug addict." Which, of course, we all know isn’t true, but whatever helps you sleep at night, Rita.Dexter’s "alien" analysis of Rita’s mom, Gail, was hilarious. The funny voice he did when saying things like, "You have made me your sworn enemy, evil woman" and "Perhaps I have misjudged you, oh wise one," made me laugh out loud.I was, however, mortified that they were discussing the BHB at the dinner table with those two small children.
