When he travels to Italy to search for a famous 19th-century poet's lost love letters, New York publisher Lewis Venable (Robert Cummings) becomes drawn into the unhealthy world of the poet's now elderly lover, Juliana Bordereau (Agnes Moorehead), and her unstable niece, Tina (Susan Hayward). Venable soon realizes all is not well in this household, which hides a terrible secret. The film is based on Henry James's novel &NFi;The Aspern Papers&NFi_;.
