Zoe Saldana by Denise Truscello/WireImage.com

This new-old Star Trek flick is really starting to come together. According to the Hollywood Reporter, director J.J. "Just Jenius" Abrams has picked Drumline knockout Zoe Saldana to play Uhura. If he somehow includes "Uhura's Song," I may have to go all fanboy on him. In other movie news, per Variety, Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are about to be perfectly cast as sibs in Jim Sheridan's Brothers, about a soldier (Spider-Man) whose ne'er-do-well bro (Donnie Darko) looks after his family while he's in Afghanistan. read more

New Star Trek Film Checks Off Its Chekov

Anton Yelchin in Alpha Dog courtesy Universal Pictures

Russian-born Anton Yelchin, whose recent credits include Alpha Dog and TV's Huff, is in talks to play Pavel Chekov, the eventual navigator of the USS Enterprise, in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film, says the Hollywood Reporter. Unreliable sources tell me the audition process involved having a Ceti eel implanted in your ear. Yowch.Yelchin will join the recently cast Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk (Josh Duhamel? Is Nathan Fillion too old?), Bones, Uhura (yikes, we're going to get Rihanna, aren't we)?, Sulu, and Scotty. Abrams is expected to sign big names to play the villain and a Federation captain. What, no Hayden Panettiere as Yeoman Rand?! read more

Heroes Scoop: Cheerleader Exits, D.L. MIA and More!

Leonard Roberts by Michael Muller/NBC

Just back from the TCA-sponsored press event on the Heroes set with scoop galore. Let's get right to it.• Lyndsy Fonseca is out as Claire's gay cheerleader pal. No, not out like that. She's out as in, off the show. According to Heroes creator Tim Kring, Fonseca's role had to be cut short after she landed that series-regular gig on Desperate Housewives. "She wasn't a pivotal character," Kring says of Claire's pal, who will now appear in just one episode. "The idea was that that part would grow, but it never got a chance to."• The entire cast was present with the exception of Leonard Roberts (D.L.), although Kring cautioned reporters not to necessarily "read anything into that." Well, considering this is the second Heroes press conference Roberts has bailed on this summer, I'm guessing D.L. is a goner.• New Hero Dania Ramirez revealed that when we first meet her character, Maya, "she's on the run from the cops."• Zachary Quinto was neither confirming nor denying re... read more

"Smoke Monster Takes Manhattan"? A mysterious, Blair Witch-style trailer for a film titled Cloverfield and touted as "from producer J.J. Abrams" has the many folk catching Transformers intrigued. The film, directed by Felicity cocreator Matt Reeves and penned by Drew Goddard (Lost, Alias), is teased with a party scene set at a New York City bar, soon disrupted by the roar of some sort of monstrous entity, followed by flames and falling debris — including the head of the Statue of Liberty. According to the Reporter, Cloverfield features a cast of relative unknowns, including Lizzy Caplan (The Class), Michael Stahl-David (The Black Donnellys), Odet Jasmin and Mike Vogel. Copies of the trailer posted to the Internet, including at YouTube, are almost immediately being ordered down by threat of copyright infringment. Steam me up, Scotty! William Shatner is reportedly flipping his wig over Leonard Nimoy apparently being offered a cameo in J.J.
