Seth Meyers is still working out the kinks for when he takes over Late Night, but one thing he has for certain is his first guest.

Meyers, who takes the stage on Feb. 24 at 12:35 a.m./11:35c, told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter previews on Sundaythe first person to sit on his couch will be Amy Poehler. NBC Boss "Unhappy" with Thursday Struggles, Renews Parks and Rec

NBC has learned its lesson.

Last season, after a strong fall powered by The Voice and Revolution, NBC not only kept the shows off the air until March 2013, but chose not to launch any midseason series in January, cuing up a huge collapse.

"Essentially the momentum from last fall fell away. This year things are different," NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said Sunday at the network's Television Critics Association winter previews. "Of course, we've got the Olympics for 18 nights, but I also think we've also gotten smarter about how we've scheduled January and February. We didn't take The Blacklist off the air in January. ... Last Monday's episode ... saw a 60 percent jump in the demo."

Q&A: NBC's Bob Greenblatt on His Comedy Conundrum, the Late Night Transition and More

James Spader

NBC headed into midseason last year with plenty of momentum — only to see its fortunes collapse as The Voice took a winter nap and new hit Revolution went on hiatus.

Lesson learned. Not taking this fall's solid ratings for granted, NBC will bring its new smash, The Blacklist, back in January before taking a break for the Olympics. And the Winter Games will provide a ratings boost as well as a broad platform on which to market the network's upcoming series.

What to Expect When Seth Meyers Takes Over Late Night

Seth Meyers, Time Magazine

When Seth Meyers takes over Late Night from Jimmy Fallon on Feb. 24, don't expect the same song and dance — literally.

Fallon's most popular Late Night sketches include the recurring "History of Rap," "History of Dance" and unconventional music covers segments, but Meyers wants to do something new. "I like that everyone before me has established this as a place to try things out," he told Time (as reported by Us Weekly). "It's 12:35 at night. You can do crazy stuff."

Weekend Review: Downton Abbey, Dateline on Asthma, Best of Fallon, All-Star Simpsons

Downton Abbey

Was it really so hard finding good help in those days? When Robert, aka Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), is informed that his wife is once again bereft of a lady's maid, he overdramatically moans, "Are we living under a curse?"

There's no question a pall thicker than London fog hangs heavy over Downton Abbey in its fourth year as Masterpiece Classic's signature series (Sunday, 9/8c, on PBS; check tvguide.com listings). Not only has Lady Cora's bedchamber not been the same since her scheming servant O'Brien left — she slinks away in the opening scene, and boy, is she missed — but the family and staff are in sustained mourning over the untimely (and contrived) death, six months earlier, of heir Matthew Crawley, Lady Mary's husband, in last year's unhappy finale.

Now that the British period drama is back on Sundays on PBS, be prepared for Bates-and-Anna watercooler chatter, your pals quoting the Dowager Countess and of course parodies, which are this millennium's sincerest form of flattery.

13 reasons to be Downton's Dowager Countess when you grow up

We've seen tributes from P. Diddy, Sesame Street, The Simpsons and Jimmy Fallon, to name a few. With Downton in its fourth season, we're expecting a slew of... read more
