I have seen a few criticisms ...

Question: I have seen a few criticisms of Brian Williams' decision to host Saturday Night Live, people saying that as a newsman he would be denigrating his integrity, Edward R. Murrow would be spinning in his grave, yada, yada. I normally don't watch the show, but as a (print) journalist, I was curious to see Williams' performance. I think there's a line between pandering yourself for cheap laughs and showing an ability to poke fun. In my opinion, Williams did a great job of demonstrating the latter. He was really entertaining and showed comedic ability, and it's not like now I'll no longer find his news reports credible. Perhaps this would've been unthinkable in the days of Walter Cronkite or even Tom Brokaw. But even if this was just a gimmick for NBC Nightly News to reach out to a "hipper" audience, I can't help but be happy and relieved for Williams. It must have felt like Lorne Michaels approached him to try skydiving for the first time. And to know he survived it without serious ... read more

Jimmy Fallon Pops the Question, and More Love Notes

SNL alum Jimmy Fallon is altar-bound, having popped the question to longtime honey Nancy Juvonen, who co-owns Flower Films with Drew Barrymore and apparently never saw Taxi, says the New York Post.... The couple will share custody of their three children, with Phillips paying child and spousal support totalling $12,200 a month. Guess who wants more Numbers guest gigs now? read more

NBC Checking Out Jimmy Fallon for Late Night Spot

Jimmy Fallon by Stephen Lovekin/WireImage.com

It's a good thing Jimmy Fallon is used to working late, because when Conan O'Brien replaces Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show in 2009, the SNL alum is likely to replace O'Brien as host of Late Night. "He is at the top of our short list," admitted NBC's late-night prez Rick Ludwin, adding that we shouldn't start holding our breath for an announcement until early '08. Fallon has also gotten a vote of confidence from his former Weekend Update coanchor, Tina Fey. He's really funny and loves to talk to people," she observed. "It must be that Irish charm." If nothing else, he'd certainly give Carson Daly a run for the up-past-bedtime TRL audience. Tuesday's Today's News was written by Ben Katner. read more

New Heroes at NBC: Charming Chuck, Dark Bionic

Zachary Levi as Chuck by Chris Haston/NBC Photo

The network of Heroes is going hero-crazy this fall. But two of NBC's more buzzed-about new genre series couldn’t be more different: a dark and disturbing "reimagining" of '70s superhero series Bionic Woman and the laugh-out-loud action-comedy Chuck, about a computer nerd whose brain is accidentally wired with government secrets, catapulting him into the spy game. Both were presented in back-to-back sessions at the TCA critics' press tour Tuesday morning.Of course, much of the latest Bionic buzz has focused on this week’s announcement that the ever-controversial Isaiah Washington is joining the show for an early five-episode arc as a mystery man brought into the secret bio-science organization that turned Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan in a new twist on the old Lindsay Wagner role) into a part-machine superhuman. It’s a casting stunt that at least a few journalists in the room feel could backfire. Executive producer Jason Smilovic defended the casting stunt by saying, &... read more

Mel Brooks: Is there a Dr. Frankenstein in the House?

A workshop production of the stage musical adaptation of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is but weeks away, and still the project has yet to find it's Dr. Frankenstein (that's pronounced Frahnken-shteen). Per the New York Post, the producers' first choice was (of course) Hugh Jackman, but the Boy from Oz is simply too busy with films. A few days ago, SNL alum Jimmy Fallon threw his lab coat into the ring with an audition that "went well," but the front-runner may actually be Tom "Ed" Cavanagh, says the Post. Already in place on the cast are Kristin Chenoweth as Inga, Sutton Foster (in the Madeleine Kahn role), Desperate Housewives' Roger Bart as Igor, and Cloris Leachman (reprising her film role of Frau Blücher.) read more

Pat O'Brien's Greatest Super Bowl

Pat O'Brien can't make up his mind. Is he a sports broadcaster who does entertainment news or is he a celebrity interviewer who dabbles in sports? After nine years at CBS Sports, he left in 1990 to do stints at ET and Access Hollywood before debuting as The Insider. In the midst of all that, O'Brien also covered the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. Next up, he hosts tonight's CBS special, The Greatest Commercials: Super Bowl vs. the World, at 8 pm/ET. It features classic American ads from the big game competing against foreign spots. As O'Brien himself would say, let's get inside...TV Guide Online: How will this TV commercial showdown impact our standing in the international community?Pat O'Brien: I feel that this is one time [Americans have] really got to get behind their country. There are no blue states, there are no red states here. There are only Americans. [But] it's funny, people do like to see what the world puts out — read more
