The flashy opening number speaks to creator Dan Harmon's plan for the third season, which he says won't be as stunt-episode heavy as the self-referential comedy has been in the past.
"I don't want to disappoint any more of the more hyperactive savvy fans that love nothing more than the fact that the show is completely unpredictable," Harmon first told TVGuide.com at the end of Season 2. "I have to continue a promise to the audience to always engage them in every part of their brain that love television. But at the same time I've got to get my mom more comfortable with the show."
But doesn't an elaborate song-and-dance routine fly in the face of that?

John Goodman will join the cast of Community for a multi-episode arc in Season 3, TVGuide.com has learned.

"Josh Holloway is as sexy, as dreamy as you would expect, even more so than he was in Lost I think," Joel McHale told TVGuide.com at Tuesday's PaleyFest tribute to Community.
Holloway, who played Southern rogue Sawyer on Lost, guest-stars on Community's two-part hourlong season finale on Thursday, May 12. "You really get to see his comedic side," said McHale. "He nails it. He's so funny. He was such a good guy, great to have around. I would follow him on to any set and then they would handcuff me and escort me out."

Community creator Dan Harmon knows that "Modern Warfare," Season 1's action-movie-spoofing paintball episode set a new standard for the show, and he's not daunted by trying to top it.
"The camera doesn't necessarily have to stay on campus this season," Harmon tells TVGuide.com. And in Thursday's episode (8/7c on NBC), it won't, as Greendale's study group goes to outer space — sort of.
