Began training in wu shu, a form of martial arts, at age 8.
Was a five-time martial-arts champion during his teens.
In 1974, he performed at the White House for President Richard Nixon as part of a wu shu troupe.
Made his film debut at age 17 in 1976's Shaolin Temple.
A devout Buddhist.
While vacationing with family, he almost drowned in the December 26, 2004, tsunami that devastated South Asia.
